A misty wander

Don’t you love it when you discover amazing places on your doorstep? We came across the wonderful Whitmoor and Rickford Commons, managed by the Surrey Wildlife Trust, last year and were thrilled. With around 400 acres to explore, it’s a Site of Special Scientific Interest and with paths that lead to heathland and wetlands. It was a bright sunny day when we visited for the first time in autumn and while it was misty this time around, the commons were just as beautiful.

#UKexplore in December 2019

Happy New Year everyone! We hope you all had an amazing Christmas and got to see in 2020 and the new decade whether you were with friends or snuggled up on the sofa! We were in Suffolk for a few days over the festive period celebrating POD’s 9th birthday, consuming vast quantities of delicious food and attempting to relax a little. Our outdoor adventures have mainly been in the countryside although we did make it down to Brighton when POD had an inset day.

#UKexplore in November 2019

Autumn is just the best isn’t it what with those striking reds, warm oranges and bright yellows to admire while enjoying the great outdoors. Don’t get me wrong this time of year is always busy with work, the build-up to POD’s birthday and Christmas but blowing away those cobwebs is a must. Fresh air is the best tonic and we’ve relished feeling the breeze on our cheeks even if it has become a little chillier recently.

Where to capture autumn colour in Surrey

There’s something pretty special about autumn. We love it and relish those autumnal hues which make us crave the great outdoors even more than usual. Nothing beats seeing those reds, oranges and yellows in all their glory and there are plenty of places in Surrey to catch those magical colours. Here are just a few of our favourites.

#UKexplore in October 2019

Isn’t this time of year gorgeous? The autumnal hues we’re currently surrounded by are just beautiful – a great reminder to get outdoors, not that we need one! One of my favourite places to visit in Surrey at this time of year is the National Trust managed Winkworth Arboretum – the array of colours never disappoints.

Pumpkin picking at Secretts

We often miss Pumpkin Week at Secretts farm in Milford as it falls on October half term. This year however we were determined to make it, even if it did follow a longer than intended bike ride in the forest. Well, I say that POD rode her bike and we mostly ran along behind her!

Surrey fireworks: What’s on when

Bonfire Night dates back to 1605 and as we know marks the anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot, when Guido Fawkes attempted to blow up King James I and his government. With so many processions, firework displays and bonfires taking place this year, here’s a round-up of some of the best in Surrey.

#UKexplore in September 2019

We were in Switzerland at the end of August (check out family travel blog POD Travels for more) so POD was back to school within a few days of being back. It’s taken her a little while to get into the swing what with new teachers and a different schedule but September seems to have disappeared so fast! I do love this time of year though when the leaves start to change and we can admire those glorious autumnal hues. I’m super excited to be doing a sunrise photo walk at one of our favourite National Trust properties this weekend. Here’s hoping I can get myself up with the larks!

Exploring Whitmoor & Rickford Commons

The strangest thing happened recently, we discovered somewhere local we’ve not visited before. It’s not like we’re new to the area either as we’ve lived in Surrey for a number of years now. I drive past Whitmoor & Rickford Commons several times a week. But always when I’m en route to or from somewhere without having the luxury of being able to stop.

#UKexplore in August 2019

August has been a busy month what with work and taking time off to spend some time on the beach in Cornwall. We then went on our first family camping trip to the Swiss Alps which involved a lot of hiking although we were rewarded with beautiful lakes and the most spectacular scenery.
