The Mamas & Papas and Liberty collection

We recently attended an exclusive event at Liberty London to mark a unique collaboration between two quintessentially British brands – Mamas & Papas and the iconic retail institution which celebrates its 140th anniversary this year.

The Heritage Suite provided the perfect spot for a children’s tea party and a nose at the collection which launches this Monday (7th September). POD was thrilled she got to sup red lemonade while decorating her own cake and partaking in a few of the activities on offer. It wasn’t long before she’d gained a flower balloon for her wrist and a balloon dog which was certainly a substitute for the real one she keeps asking for!

She also got to have her nails painted for the first time with water soluble varnish. She decided against having her face painted although typically changed afterwards!

Being an especially style conscious four year old, POD loved that she could have a headband of fresh flowers created. Two of her favourite things from then on were certainly the cuddly dollies and a beautiful rocking horse she later rode on.

Liberty has inspired shoppers with their style and eccentricity since 1875, creating iconic prints that are recognised the world over.  The Mamas & Papas and Liberty range consists of purple floral print Ros which was originally designed by Liberty’s in-house team for their A/W 2002 season. The Emilia’s Flower fabric is made up of a dense arrangement of tiny red, coral and blue flowers.

The brightly coloured Thorpe was drawn up by the Hayward studio in 1968. The dense floral design is reminiscent of Liberty’s 1930s floral prints. The joyous grey Wild Flower design was initially inspired by illustrations from an early 19th Century book, ‘Field Guide to Wild Flowers in Britain’.

The striking leaf and berry pattern of Wiltshire was originally designed for Liberty in 1933. The Caesar and Ares black and white prints are classic Liberty designs, but they’ve been given an exclusive Mamas & Papas twist.

The Mamas & Papas and Liberty range consists of a travel collection of strollers and accessories decorated with Liberty’s striking Caesar and Ares prints for strolling in style.

The glorious patterns that adorn the children’s clothing include delicate vintage styles that are brought to life with a distinct look. While the stunning interiors collection includes ditsy florals, intricate details and vintage inspired toys to transform any nursery or bedroom.

We loved the entire Mamas & Papas and Liberty range which is suitable for children up to four years old. Our most loved piece is the Wild Flower Mesh Dress below centre (£45).

Other favourite pieces include the Wild Flower Tunic and Leggings Set top left (from £34), Emilia’s Flower Cardigan top centre (£32), the Wiltshire Frill Neck Dress top right (from £38), Thorpe Mess Dress bottom left (from £45), Wiltshire Collared Dress bottom centre (from £45) and the Thorpe Frill Neck Dress (from £38).

Beach huts and a mermaid in West Wittering

Last weekend we made an impromptu trip to the coast. With the promise of temperatures of up to thirty degrees, we left the house at the crack of sparrows in a quest southward to West Wittering. Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, West Wittering Beach in Sussex is a large sandy beach located a stones throw away from Chichester Harbour.

The B&W Photography Project | Week #60

Hello everyone, welcome to week #60 of the Black and White Photography Project. Thank you so much to those of you that joined in last time.

This week I thought I’d share a few of the wonderful beach huts from West Wittering in Sussex. We escaped there last weekend to make the most of the glorious temperatures. West Wittering is one of the the premier Blue Flag beaches in the country so I was glad we arrived early and grabbed a prime spot by the sand dunes. And escaped before the masses did!

Are we ready for POD to start school?

Next Tuesday we find out where POD is on the waiting list for the local school. She was in the top ten six weeks ago so we can only presume she’ll be near the top then. We were really disappointed when she didn’t get offered a place with her chums but we’ve moved on since then. These past weeks have seen us firmly focused on getting POD organised for her new school as well as working out how to get there!

A look back at the brilliant GoFest 2015

You may remember we recently wrote about GoFest 2015, the UK’s first ever festival of sport. It promised to be an action-packed three day festival for all the family spanning not just sport but dance and a whole host of other activities too. There was a choice of 50 types of sport to choose from as well as live music, entertainment and an array of sporting and celebrity appearances – Roger Black, Kevin Keegan, Steve Backley, Ian Waite and Natalie Lowe to name just a few.

GoFest prides itself on being an inclusive festival and there were activities on offer for all ages, genders and abilities. There were 15 zones to choose from – GoBat, GoBike, GoChill, GoCompete, GoCool, GoFit, GoFuel, GoKids, GoNetball, GoSpike, GoSplash, GoStrut, GoToddle, GoTry and GoTumble.

The sporting activities on offer included archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, canoeing/kayaking, cheerleading, climbing, cricket, dodgeball, football, gymnastics, hockey, judo, lacrosse, racketball, rugby, scuba diving, squash, swimming, taekwondo, tennis, trampolining, volleyball. Body Combat, Family Bollywood, FitSteps, Globe Fit Hoola and Street Funk were just some of the dances that took pace on the main stage.

GoFest

The POD Father and I did a lot of sport at school so GoFest provided a great opportunity for us to pick up sports we’d not played recently. For our four year old daughter POD, the festival offered an amazing opportunity for her to try a number of sports she’d not tried before.

As well as loving the concept of GoFest 2015, we were thrilled it took place at Surrey Sports Park as it’s local to us in Guildford. It’s a world class elite training and fitness venue and one of Europe’s premier sites for sport, health, well-being and leisure. Their facilities include an Olympic swimming pool, 12ft climbing walls, dance and exercise studios, 3 indoor arenas, 8 squash courts, 3 artificial pitches, 8 tennis courts, 2 basketball courts and 2 netball courts.

Surrey Sports Park is the permanent training base for Harlequins RUFC, Netball Super League runners up Surrey Storm and National Badminton League team Surrey Smashers whose community teams led the coaching sessions at GoFest 2015.

The event was supported by a raft of the UK governing bodies of sport, professional clubs and businesses too including England Hockey, English Squash and Racketball, Volleyball England, Sport England, Flair Gymnastics, British Athletics, The FA, Surrey County Cricket Club, British Canoeing, Go Canoeing, the LTA, British Judo, Guildford Tennis Academy, Surrey TaeKwon-do, Surrey Spartans Hockey Club, Discover Archery, Go Ape and British Military Fitness.

We planned to pre-book the majority of our sports sessions in advance of the event but a last minute holiday meant we failed to do this. That said we arrived as soon as the gates opened and managed to secure almost all the activities we wanted to participate in. I suspect we were very lucky this time around so next year we’ll definitely look to book beforehand with our activities split over a two day period.

First on our agenda was hockey, both myself and the POD Father played at school but POD has never had the opportunity to try it. She was actually rather good and got some great coaching from one of the Surrey Smashers team. She’s not experienced such a fantastic surface before though so she did sneak in a couple of forward rolls!

PODcast - collage 1

After checking out the rugby, the Doves are huge fans, we headed indoors for a gymnastics session Flair were running. POD is a climber and has great balancing skills so she’s participated in gymnastics before. She did two terms a few months back before joining pre-school on a full-time basis. It took her a little while to get used to a different environment but the Flair Gymnastics team were excellent at instilling confidence and getting her involved. We did see a number of bunny hops and star jumps over the horse before we headed outdoors again.

PODcast collage 2

One of the things we hadn’t taken into consideration, as we were so focused on all the sport, were the activities on the main stage. POD was utterly mesmerised watching Ian Waite dance and who can blame her, he’s awesome. We love Strictly Come Dancing so we were thrilled we got to have a chat to Ian and wave at Natalie Lowe. Both were just lovely and exactly how you imagined them to be. POD was rather taken by Goggles, the event mascot, and gave him at hug at every available opportunity. The Power Rangers went down very well too.

PODcast collage 3

The weather was really varied while we were at GoFest and although that didn’t matter, it was fantastic when the sun shone. We were in the best venue with brilliant activities on offer and we got to catch up on the Wimbledon Finals in-between too. A big thumbs up for us as we’re massive tennis fans! We were amazed at how much there was to do at GoFest, it was absolutely the best environment for active families and anyone interested in sport.

PODcast collage 4

POD managed to squeeze in time on a trampoline and a bouncy castle as well as covering her leg in stickers just before we headed to the pool for some swimming.

PODcast collage 5

A few days before GoFest 2015, POD swam from the middle of a pool to the edge for the very first time. She was wearing armbands and although she didn’t swim far, it was a huge breakthrough given how fearful she’d been the week before. She wasn’t sure about the Olympic pool initially but once she got used to it there was no stopping her. She swam all by herself for quite some time and despite being rather tired at this point did brilliantly!

Collage 5

Another of the activities we’d signed up for was climbing. POD has always loved climbing and although she’s still a little too short to attempt a wall, she was desperate to give it a try. She did amazingly well in a group of people that were much older than her and it was at the back end of the day too. As we suspected she has another couple of inches to go before she’ll be able to scale a wall. She gave it a very good go though. As did Daddy who climbed to the top of the wall at great speed!

PODcast collage 6

After success in the pool and on the climbing wall, we treated ourselves to some rather wonderful lollies and a sit down before Daddy played tennis. POD and I watched the action from outside court and enjoy the blistering sunshine.

PODcast collage 7

Funnily enough since GoFest 2015 finished we’ve visited Surrey Sports Park on numerous occasions. POD has had a couple of trial sessions with Flair Gymnastics and joins their weekly class from September. The POD Father plays football at Surrey Sports Park and recently started playing hockey there after a twenty year absence (yes you did read that right!).

We’re absolutely loved GoFest and if you didn’t get to go this year, make sure you do in 2016. Paul Farris (GoFest Founder), his family and his team at Juice Communications did an incredible job, it was brilliant. If you’d like to see more, check out the photos on the GoFest Facebook page or have a look at the official video.

Beautiful woollies from Wool Overs

Although in the blink of an eye summer seems almost over, there’s something rather special about this time of year. The air is beginning to feel slightly fresher and the wonderful hues that come with Autumn are within our grasp. Even better, it’s the perfect time to treat ourselves to cosy woollies we can wear when we’re admiring the great outdoors.

Wool Overs is a world class knitwear retailer with a range that consists of 160 classic styles in 180 different colour combinations. Their ethos over the past 26 years is very much focused on bringing excellent value to lovers of wool, cotton and cashmere knitwear. Working in association with the British Wool Board and Woolmark, they offer yarns of the highest quality which are made from 100% natural fibres and fully machine washable. A huge bonus for us time short parents who don’t need the faff of hand washing or a trip to the dry cleaners.

The Wool Overs range includes cardigans, jumpers, tops, shirts and scarves for both men and women. There are also unisex options available. What I love about their website is that you can select the styles that you really want. From the fabric, the colour and the style to the neckline, the sleeve and the length. The POD Father is a huge fan of the men’s jumpers, particularly the merino and cashmere blend.

PODcast Wool Overs collage 1

The V neck jumper is a personal favourite of his as its great for layering, luxuriously soft and more cost effective than the 100% cashmere alternative. He’s spoilt for choice with 23 colours to choose from, not just in the v neck but also the crew neck variant too. From staple black, charcoal and navy to sea green, turquoise and kingfisher or at the other end of the spectrum red, rose and royal blue.

Wool Overs offers many different styles including Aran, Cable, Guernsey, Jersey and Nordic as well as tops, shirts, tunics and scarves. If a V or crew neck isn’t to your taste, there are a wide range of other styles including polo/turtle necks and zipped options. As well as selecting the wool, style and neck, you can also choose the gauge (extra fine, fine, medium or heavy) and the type of front (buttoned, closed front or zipped).

PODcast collage 1

Wool Overs makes shopping for quality knitwear so much easier. They has the best selection of mens jumpers I’ve seen in quite some time whether for the great outdoors or wandering round a golf course. They also have an wonderful collection of quality knitwear for women too including cashmere jumpers, silk cardigans and ballet wraps plus of course the day-to-day essentials.

POD and the little black pony

Last week we escaped to a National Trust favourite to blow away a few cobwebs. Hatchlands Park is nestled in the Surrey Hills and luckily for us located a short drive away from where we live. The mansion is a family home containing a collection of paintings and fine furniture as well as Europe’s largest collection of keyboard instruments. Hatchlands Park also has some 400 acres of ancient woodland and parkland – the perfect playground for four year old POD.
