It’s that time of year when POD tells everyone it’s her birthday soon. On discovering her birthday is Christmas Day, the response is often negative. Typically we hear “you poor thing”, “what a shame” or “that’s rubbish” closely followed by “do you get double presents?”. My personal favourite is “you didn’t plan that very well” although asking if we celebrate her birthday on Christmas Day has to be in the mix too. The truth is POD loves her Christmas Day birthday and we’ve always done our best to make sure she doesn’t miss out.

Don’t get me wrong this time of year is always busy with work, the build-up to POD’s birthday and Christmas but blowing away those cobwebs is a must. Fresh air is the best tonic and we’ve relished feeling the breeze on our cheeks even if it has become a little chillier recently.

Nothing beats seeing those reds, oranges and yellows in all their glory and there are plenty of places in Surrey to catch those magical colours. Here are just a few of our favourites.

One of my favourite places to visit in Surrey at this time of year is the National Trust managed Winkworth Arboretum – the array of colours never disappoints.

With so many processions, firework displays and bonfires taking place this year, here’s a round-up of some of the best in Surrey.

It’s not like we’re new to the area either as we’ve lived in Surrey for a number of years now. I drive past Whitmoor & Rickford Commons several times a week. But always when I’m en route to or from somewhere without having the luxury of being able to stop.

We then went on our first family camping trip to the Swiss Alps which involved a lot of hiking although we were rewarded with beautiful lakes and the most spectacular scenery.

The exhibits are continually changing so there is always something new to discover with almost all sculptures for sale. It really is one of Surrey’s hidden gems as POD and I discovered when we visited.

That said, we managed to squeeze in a trip to Cornwall to visit JD’s uncle. He’s just a few minutes walk from Perranporth beach which is just idyllic. Perfect for POD and a wonderful place to take a step back, relax and appreciate the important things in life. We had glorious weather too which always helps doesn’t it?
