I recently had some clever surgery which involved creating a new wrist joint in my arm (you can read about itΒ here). Last week my plaster cast was replaced and I became the proud owner of a snazzy new red one. Since then I’ve been able to give POD, my two-year-old, a proper hug and do a few of the simple things we all take for granted.
The new cast freed my fingers from plaster. I celebrated by wiggling them for an entire afternoon. I scrubbed off all the red dye and I was able to put my rings back on. Fast forward a few days and I can hold a tube of toothpaste while I remove its lid. I can do a bra up at the front and shuffle it round to where it needs to be. I look less like Worzel Gummidge as IΒ can tie my hair back myself.
When you’re used to typing with both hands and barely glancing at the keyboard, using only two fingers is frustrating. You don’t know where the keys are for a start. Added to which you’re attempting to press keys on opposite ends of the keyboard with the same hand. This weekend however, not only has my speed improved, I’ve been able to hold down the shift and caps lock key with the other hand. It’s made such a difference.
Finally, I received a plastic sleeve the other day to protect my new cast from getting wet. I cannot put into words how exiting it is to have a shower for the first time when you’ve had to have a bath every day. It was without doubt the most incredible shower I have ever had. I came out a shrivelled prune but felt great.
This post is for reasons to be cheerful run by the fabulous Mummy from the Heart. We’re also linking up with Magic Moments over at The Oliver’s MadhouseΒ asΒ it’s been a momentous week.
Good to hear you are making a good recovery after the op. I can understand how lovely that bath must have felt (I only have a shower and miss having a bath so much). #magicmoments xx
Thank you Karen, that shower was AMAZING π
Fingers are one of those things that we take for granted most of the time and it’s only when we can’t use them that we realise just how flipping used they are! The mere thought of typing with two fingers sends shivers down my spine π
I hope your recovery continues to improves fast x
Thanks Annie, the one handed typing skills are coming along. I can’t wait to type with two hands again though π
Lovely to hear that you are well on the road to recovery and, by the sounds of it, you will soon be back to dexterity in both hands. I too touch type and I’m sure I would be totally at sea trying to type with one finger. You just have to watch me texting on my smart phone for proof of that!
Thank you, it’s a little way off yet but I’m looking forward to teaching that new arm/wrist joint to type. Hope you’re enjoying your free time π
im so so glad your feeling more chipper honey and i would be celebrating being able to have shower instead of a bath .. i hate baths!
Thanks for linking up with #magicmoments xx
Thanks lovely, its great to be able o do things, even if they are only small π
Am glad you are on the mend. Our fingers and hands and arms are hard to be without when they’re out of commission. Popped over from #MagicMoments
Thank you Karen, it’s amazing how much we use them π
Glad you wrist is on the mend. I love a shower I’d be lost if I had to have a bath!! X
Thank you – baths take too long that’s for sure!
I’m glad you are on the mend, it’s horrible being without full use of a limb. We really do take them for granted. The bliss of a hot shower is hard to beat.
By the way my 3 yr old loves your blog layout! She said “oh wow mummy, look at those pretty flowers, they are very bootful (beautiful)!
Thank you Nichola, we so do! I’ll get there though, it might just take a little while. Great to hear your 3 year old loves the design – it was done by an illustrator π
That made me smile – You always want the one thing you cannot have, so that first time you get it back it is heaven!!
Thanks Kara, the little things have made me very happy this week π
Glad you are on the mend. Im the opposite and struggle to type with two hands, I’ve completed two different typing courses, yet I still type one handed. People always comment on it and I’m told I’m the weirdest typer ever! Lol x
Thank you. You must be great at typing one handed, I guess its what you’re used to! I’m getting there π
There’s nothing like a good hug. I remember trying to have a bath with a broken leg!
That must have been so difficult but might have looked rather amusing. The lengths we’ll go to to get clean π
It’s such a nice feeling to be able to shower after you’ve been wearing a cast. A love of rough sports as a child (the sports weren’t rough; I was) left me with many a broken bone. I became rather adept at showering with a plastic bag over my bandages π
It was the best feeling ever! Sounds like you’ve done it a lot!
Glad to hear the recovery’s progressing! Wearing a plaster is a grim affair. I remember the days when I had to stick my leg out and balance it at a right angle, on a stool, just so I could have a shower without getting it wet….
Thanks Nell, it’s all fun and games isn’t it?! Sounds like you had an interesting time too. The lengths we’ll go to to feel clean π
Hello,Im so glad that you are beginning to recover, its like everybody says fingers are one of those items we take for granted, until we cant use them!I bet that shower felt real good! X Popping by from Jaimes magic moment linky x
Thank you Jess, we kind of need them don’t we – and yes that first shower was great π
That is a wonderful reason and hugs make it all that more special :0) You don’t really realise how much we use every aspect of your frame until one part needs mending.
Rest that wrist as much as you can and be good to yourself.
Thank you so much, it’s funny how reliant we become. Quite nice to appreciate it π
Fab to hear you are making your way back to normality. It really is amazing how much you take your hands for granted, this must have been a very frustrating time for you! Hugs with little POD again and a shower – the best!! Hurray! xx
Thanks lovely, funny how we take it all for granted. Appreciate it so much more π
So glad you’re on the mend, take it easy, but enjoy the hugs and the showers π As others have said, we take so much for granted, perhaps it’s no bad thing to be reminded every so often. Here’s to your continued recovery xx
Thank you so much Sara, those little things make such a difference! Not very good at taking it easy mind π
Lol, I can relate tot h things simple. I love standing under a hot shower for way too long. have a great bank holiday, Mich x
It makes you appreciate what you have so much more doesn’t it! Have a great bank holiday too π
