The Next Chapter

Many of you know I’ve had an arm in plaster these past weeks. Two surgeons made a new wrist joint in my arm. This involved inserting more metal in the wrist I broke 18 months ago so it no longer moves. Then removing some bone from my arm to form a new wrist joint. It’s a clever procedure and I hope in time it will make me bionic.

On Monday, my plaster was removed with a saw. The cast was taken off so fast I didn’t dare move. Or breathe. It was amazing to see my arm again despite its withered appearance and funny looking scar. The lengthy wait in x-ray afterwards resulted in unintentionally leaving a sea of dry skin that resembled red fish food everywhere.

After visiting my surgeon, I was able to give my hand and arm a good scrub. With soap. For the first time in 6 weeks. It felt weird as my wrist isn’t working properly yet but truly wonderful. The following morning I was able to have a shower without wearing a plastic sleeve. Amazing. I stayed there until I resembled a human prune.

Today I have forced my wrist over so I can type two-handed. I *might* be over compensating with my shoulder slightly. Being able to touch type when you’ve made do with two fingers is brilliant.

The last slice of joy comes courtesy of our toddler. Having had various uses for her potty over these past months, she has finally used it as it was intended. Some of you may have read in The Potty Nest post, she said ‘thank you your Majesty’ when I flushed her gubbins down the toilet!

Oh Charly I didn’t realise your wrist injury was so serious, so pleased for you that the plaster is finally off, it’s always a bit of a shock, lots of physio I’m guessing. Well done to POD for her continuing appropriate potty usage. We are doing really well too, no more nappies! I feel Mummy needs a sticker too!

Aww bless you, delighted the plaster is off – I can shower and type properly! Lots of physio but I know what I’m capable of after breaking both my wrist bones. POD is doing brilliantly, not put her in knickers yet though, it feels a little premature πŸ™‚

As above, I had no idea how bad your wrist injury was. So glad you are under way to recovery now, and also so impressed you have been able to tap out all these posts. (I can’t touch type – still use two fingers! All the best for your recovery!

I think it helps having broken my wrist so badly 18 months ago. The exercises I have so far are very similar to the ones I had previously. It’s great to have the plaster off and be able to get that process underway. You must be a speedy one handed typist πŸ™‚

What an incredible reason to be cheerful. It still amazes me how you have achieved so much on your blog with just the use of one hand. Look forward to hearing more about your journey to being a bionic woman! (but then aren’t all mummies that anyway?!) xx

Aww bless you. I can’t survive without typing – I need it for work and for the blog. So funny how reliant we get on ourselves isn’t it. I think you’re right, we’re all bionic πŸ™‚

That’s probably one of the best reasons to be cheerful. It really must feel amazing to have your cast off and to hopefully have your wrist fully functioning in the near future. Will you have to have physio now or just exercise at home to strengthen it? Using the potty properly is an awesome moment.

Thanks Nichola – it’s amazing to have the cast off! It’s going to be a while before it’s working properly and the scar needs an hour’s massaging a day but I’ll get there πŸ™‚

Thanks Fiona, it’s great to have the plaster off and be able to type/shower *not at the same time*
