The first signs of Autumn

We love Winkworth Arboretum. Although renowned for its incredible colour displays in Spring and Autumn, it’s a wonderful place to visit any time of year. The National Trust have done a fantastic job maintaining its natural beauty. We spent quite a long time when we arrived climbing trees. Although we ticked this off our #50things list a long time ago, POD has always loved climbing. I’m sure she enjoyed waving and shouting “hello” at passers-by though just as much!

PODcast IMG_9301

After a short banana break, the stepping stones were next on POD’s list. She quickly discovered getting Mummy to hold her hand meant she could hover in the air which was so much more fun! She said the mushrooms we saw might eat her wellies but I’m sure she was just playing me.

PODcast IMG_9320

Having checked out the fallen chestnuts and found a suitable wand (stick), we headed off to explore the nearby trails. This involved more climbing and jumping plus a little running off.

PODcast IMG_9349

And many a muddy puddle to jump into!

PODcast IMG_9379

Having refueled, we set off towards the boathouse and the lake. POD raced down the steps at speed stopping only to throw leaves – mostly at Mummy. It was a great game she found highly entertaining.

PODcast IMG_9394

Just by the boathouse we came across a man who was seemingly calling the ducks. Convinced it wouldn’t work we watched on with interest only to witness ducks leaving the lake and making their way towards him on the path.

I was relieved to see he had bread as we had very little to offer other than the end of a roll (and some brownie although that was for me). POD took it upon herself to help the duck man, under his guidance of course, only to continually request more bread.

PODcast IMG_9412

She wasn’t best pleased when we had to leave them (mainly as all bread supplies had been exhausted!) but we found two ‘busy’ dragonflies to keep us occupied.

PODcast IMG_9426

With the sun making an appearance it was too nice not to just enjoy the lake for a time. The ducks made their way back onto it and you could almost sense they were basking in the sunshine now they were fully fed. We found a lonesome conker just before we left which POD decided to keep safe in her pocket so ‘no-one would steal it’.

Sun

All the excitement meant POD was a little weary walking back up towards the car. With Daddy full of cold at home, Mummy didn’t make for a good piggy back replacement. With both of us back walking, we took it slowly taking in the views at the lookout tower and spotting those early signs of Autumn on the way. No doubt we’ll be back again in the coming weeks to see Winkworth ablaze with red, orange and yellow.

Alphabet Project | T is for tree climbing

Thank you to everyone that joined the Alphabet Photography Project over the past week with letter S.

This week may seem like a bit of a cop out but POD loves loves trees. Even if they have no branches she’ll attempt to climb them! Although there are lots of photographs of POD in trees, this one was taken a few days ago at National Trust managed Winkworth Arboretum.

How to join in

The Alphabet Photography Project runs every Wednesday. A Linky is live from that day until the following Tuesday so you can upload a short post or an Instagram photo. If you include a link back to PODcast I’m happy to share it for you.

You can post a photo on Instagram (PODcast is here) using the hashtag #alphabetphoto. There are also PinterestFacebook and Google+ groups.

Ideas for letter T

The #alphabetphoto theme can be interpreted in any way you choose. Your letter might be a photograph for example, an object that resembles a letter or an adjective. Have a look at the letter T hints in last week’s post. If you get really stuck, an online Scrabble dictionary is a good point of reference!

Here are a few ideas to get us thinking about letter U:

Up, urn, umbrella, unit, ugly, upon, urge, uncle, unpeg, unfix, unfit, usage, upper, unzip, under, uncut, udder, utmost, urchin, upside, upsize, update, uplift, uphill, unruly, unpack, unlock, unique, united, utterly, upstand, upgrade, unspoken, unleashed, uncurled.

The B&W Photography Project | Week #11

Thank you to everyone that joined in with the Black and White Photography Project over the past few days. One of the things I love is that it’s made me photograph things I wouldn’t do normally. Like capture the graffiti in a London skate park!

Alphabet Project | S is for shells

Thank you to everyone that joined the Alphabet Photography Project over the past week with letter R.

This is POD on the hunt for shells at Felixstowe beach after her first ever dip in the sea. She collected quite a few in that rainbow hat of hers too.

The B&W Photography Project | Week #10

Thank you to everyone that joined in with the Black and White Photography Project over the past week.

I’ve spent more time wandering along the Southbank on my journey to and from work. I love the contrast between the quiet mornings and the buzz of the evening. This photograph of the London Eye was taken at 8am when there was hardly a soul around.

PODcast IMG_8534 B&W

At the end of the working day, if you’re lucky you’ll see the sun setting above the Thames as you walk over Blackfriars Bridge. Capturing the orange sky and the glittery reflections on the water always proves too tempting to resist. It’s a distraction especially when there are gems like this and the surrounding architecture to photograph too.

Welcome to the Black and White Photography Project | Week #10.

First bike ride

POD loved chatting to the mannequins in our local cycle shop recently but she displayed great pedaling skills too. Although steering and facing forward were notably absent, she’s the proud owner of her first bicycle. We opted for one with stabilisers rather than a balance bike which she’d no doubt grow out of before we could blink.

PODcast IMG_8407 this one

This weekend we headed over to Alice Holt Forest so POD could try her bike out properly. Managed by the Forestry Commission, it’s always a wonderful place to visit and the smell of the pine trees is divine – we regularly visit. Although POD decided not to pedal at all at first, she enjoyed the view from her bike especially when she looked up at the trees.

PODcast IMG_8409

Seeing a wooden fort was quite distracting and she stopped pedaling almost as soon as she’d begun. On discovering a group of boys were chasing each other around it, she sat patiently on a tree trunk waiting her turn.

Once she’d climbed to the top a couple of times, the helmet was put back in place and she was on the move again. Albeit very slowly. She does well with pedaling if the pedals are in the right position and she’s learnt how to ring the bell!

PODcast IMG_8449

Facing forwards is not second nature just yet. POD was more interested in peering at her feet, observing what was around her or looking behind her. Staying on the path was a little tricky at times as she’s not got to grips with how to steer. We headed towards the bracken on several occasions but kept her on the path. It was only a matter of time before she left the path completely although she found it highly entertaining!

PODcast IMG_8444

With Daddy behind her and me running backwards in front of her (while taking photographs!), she managed a few minutes of constant pedaling gathering speed in the process. It was at that point, POD discovered cycling is really good fun. The look on her face at that moment was just priceless. Pure joy!
