Project 365: Week #7

It was a case of battling the elements this week for the outdoor captures. Day 45 was taken just as the storm approached Surrey so it’s a miracle there’s a photo! We did manage to get out – firstly to the Devil’s Punch Bowl and latterly to capture exotic butterflies and orchids.

Welcome to Project 365 week #7.

Day 40

This photograph was taken at the Devil’s Punch Bowl – an area of outstanding natural beauty. We enjoyed panoramic views, much puddle splashing and even came across a field of wild horses. This is the moment POD realised there was mustard in Mummy’s ham sandwich (despite already eating one!). You can see more photographs of the Devil’s Punch Bowl here.

Day 41

POD had her second gymnastics session. She did brilliantly on the apparatus – speeding across the balance beam and on the trapeze twice. She even attempted the straddle and a tuck positions.

We had our storm damaged fence replaced today. POD and I spotted this porky little Robin in our neighbour’s garden. This is a female – the (much slimmer!) male is a frequent visitor to our garden.

Day 42

Working today. Another Hydrangea bud caught my eye – the veins of this one looked wonderful through a macro lens!

Day 43

RHS Wisley had a cancellation for a private photography session at their Butterflies in the Glasshouse event. I was outside their entrance at 7.30am raring to go. It wasn’t a tutored session but I got to take photographs before the working day which was pretty special.

It was tough choosing a photo for this day but this White Morpho looks like it is wearing headphones! You can see more photographs at Butterflies in the Glasshouse (part two).

Day 44

The garden always provides a happy haven even if it’s just for a few minutes – especially when you spot some colour.

Day 45

This photograph was taken just as the storm approached Surrey and the rain became heavier. I was delighted to find these berries further down the garden.  The ones that hung over our damaged fence couldn’t be saved when it was replaced.

Day 46

This is POD immersed in Toy Story 3. She loves this film although she’s not very keen on the cymbal-banging monkey – as you can see from her expression!

That butterfly photo is stunning! You can really see the fear in POD’s eyes when she’s watching Toy Story 3!

    • Charly Dove February 15, 2014 at 6:10 pm

Thank you Sarah, I took so many photographs! POD really doesn’t like the monkey!

  • 76 sunflowers February 15, 2014 at 3:05 pm

Loving POD’s expressions. I’m with her on the mustard! Beautiful garden visitor in the form of Mrs Robin 🙂

    • Charly Dove February 15, 2014 at 6:11 pm

She has many expressions! I’m no mustard fan either, it was very mild. The robin was lovely, just sat there while I took a photo through the window – very kind 🙂

  • Dragonsfypoppy February 15, 2014 at 3:11 pm

Gorgeous photos honey, truly lovely. The robin is exquisite…I sometimes think robins are little angels xx

    • Charly Dove February 15, 2014 at 6:15 pm

Thank you so much. I do love robins – how lovely to sometimes think they are little angels 🙂

  • Angela February 15, 2014 at 5:40 pm

Gorgeous photos, love them all, the storms and flooding in England were on the news here in Texas and I watched a video online of the Thames during a helicopter ride and saw all the flooding, scary stuff.

    • Charly Dove February 15, 2014 at 9:36 pm

Thank you Angela. The flooding here has been dreadful, I’m thankful we’ve just lost a fence and live on a hill. Your weather looks like it’s been mad too 🙂

  • spicers1976 February 15, 2014 at 6:20 pm

Love the shot of the robin, looks just like a greetings card

    • Charly Dove February 15, 2014 at 9:40 pm

Aww you’re too kind, thank you 🙂

  • Kriss MacDonald February 15, 2014 at 8:15 pm

Despite your rain and wind, I’m so jealous that you’re getting signs of colour and spring. Wonderful photos – just popped over to your other post to admire you’re butterfly shots – and what a great expression on Pod’s face in the last shot. Beautiful photos!

    • Charly Dove February 15, 2014 at 9:47 pm

Thank you Kriss. It’s funny how many signs of life there are – quite hard doing garden ones this week, it’s been so wet. It’s helping everything grow though at least. I just hope we don’t get snow when everything’s come up although give me snow over freaky winds any day 🙂

  • suzanne3childrenandit February 15, 2014 at 8:59 pm

She does look a little worried by the monkey! I am looking forward to going to the butterfly house with the kids on Friday – a private hour in there would be amazing!

    • Charly Dove February 15, 2014 at 9:55 pm

She really doesn’t like the monkey. He is weird but thankfully only in 5 minutes of the film! Are you going to Wisley on Friday?! You’ll love it 🙂

  • Michelle Twin Mum February 15, 2014 at 9:39 pm

Ohh I love Wisley, not been there in a few years. Your plant photos are fab Charly, I want a macro lens! Mich x

    • Charly Dove February 15, 2014 at 10:00 pm

Thank you Mich. I love the macro lens, it’s so different to the others – taken a while to learn how to use it though. I don’t read manuals either, I like teaching myself. Weird I know! Wisley is great, it’s not far from us so we go a fair bit 🙂

  • Notmyyearoff February 15, 2014 at 9:44 pm

I’m trying to think of the cymbal banging monkey now – bless her little face. I think I need to watch it again. Beautiful pics as always!

    • Charly Dove February 15, 2014 at 10:01 pm

Thank you. The monkey runs a control room. Thankfully he’s only in it for 5 minutes 🙂

  • Elaine Livingstone February 15, 2014 at 9:49 pm

her face does look a bit upset, my son use to hide for bits of films he did not like. The hydrangea bud is amazing, and I really like the buds that are coming out on that amazing robin picture. All yours are so crisp and clear, I am in awe at your talent

    • Charly Dove February 15, 2014 at 10:12 pm

Thank you so much, what a wonderful thing to say. POD doesn’t mind the scene as much now, she loves the film though. We have two Hydrangea bushes, one by the front door and one by the back so they keep catching my eye 🙂

  • TheBoyandMe February 15, 2014 at 9:59 pm

Oh I love the consternation on her face while watching Toy Story 3, The Boy has never seen it as he’s stroppy about anything vaguely malevolent in films or television programmes!

Thanks for linking up to Project 365.

    • Charly Dove February 15, 2014 at 10:14 pm

The Boy probably has the right idea to be honest – I don’t like the monkey either! POD does do brilliant faces. I had to photograph those eyes, they’re always so expressive 🙂

  • Amanda Walsh February 15, 2014 at 10:16 pm

Pod doesnt look too impressed with that mustard and that is on well fed robin!!

    • Charly Dove February 15, 2014 at 10:56 pm

She wasn’t impressed with the mustard but she’d already eaten an entire sandwich. It was very mild though! That robin was huge in comparison to the regular one – almost double the size!

  • Alexandra Mercer February 15, 2014 at 10:25 pm

I love the bokeh in the second to last photo.

    • Charly Dove February 16, 2014 at 9:28 am

      Thank you Alex 🙂

  • Coombemill February 15, 2014 at 11:01 pm

  • Jo Laybourn (Sit Still Monkeys) February 15, 2014 at 11:17 pm

Charly, your photography skills are fabulous! I love all these photo’s! How sad does Pod look watching Toy Story 3 bless her!

    • Charly Dove February 16, 2014 at 9:32 am

Thank you Jo, very kind of you. POD was great the rest of Toy Story, it’s just the 5 minutes of the monkey she’s not keen on 🙂

  • leanne rain February 15, 2014 at 11:59 pm

  • Kara February 16, 2014 at 6:45 am

I love the expression on her face – that symbol banging monkey is a little scary though!

    • Charly Dove February 16, 2014 at 9:38 am

It was one of those moments that needed to be captured! Not a fan of the monkey either though it has to be said 🙂

  • jenny paulin February 16, 2014 at 8:02 am

seeing your beautoful photos each week does make me think i should lesarn how to use my PH’s equipment better! The Devils Punch Bowl is a great name isnt it? The robin sat among the white branches is so wintry and that butterfly shot is a great capture too. Pod does look a little worried watching Toy Story 3 – that film makes me cry! x

    • Charly Dove February 16, 2014 at 9:39 am

Your photographs are fabulous Jenny – if there’s more equipment to use I’d definitely have a tinker though! Devil’s Punch Bowl is a brilliant name, such an amazing place too. Was great capturing the butterflies and such a lucky shot with the robin!

  • Erica Price February 16, 2014 at 8:57 am

  • Ruth @geekmummy February 16, 2014 at 8:52 pm

Another beautiful collection of photos! I’m impressed that you managed to get so many outdoor shots with the weather this week. And Pod’s face in that last one is so cute!

    • Charly Dove February 20, 2014 at 10:24 pm

Thank you Ruth. On working days it’s easiest to just pop outside and capture something from the garden – hopefully there will be more to see soon! Love that little face :))

  • Menai February 20, 2014 at 11:54 am

Gorgeous blog – what stunning wildlife photography! I am a big fan of RHS too and used to live opposite Kew Gardens. We don’t like that monkey either! Has she seen “Tin Toy”? (it’s a short film on the Toy Story (1) DVD as an extra usually – one of the first Pixar films and where the idea for all the Toy Story world came from I think – the baby in it is the scary one but while the tin toy resembles the monkey, he is adorable and we root for his escape!

    • Charly Dove February 20, 2014 at 10:48 pm

Thank you very much. It must have been wonderful being opposite Kew Gardens. We love the RHS, Wisley is only 10 minutes drive from us too so it’s very handy. We must have a look at Tin Toy as we’ve not seen that – thank you 🙂
