Photographs from Perranporth, Cornwall

How fast are the weeks flying by at the moment? Crazy to think it’s almost the end of June. POD asked when she’ll be seven the other day and her birthday is just 6 months away – it doesn’t seem five minutes since her last one! She’s growing up way too fast that’s for sure, fiercely independent too. Not that that’s a bad thing of course. On the subject of birthdays, we were in Perranporth in Cornwall a few weeks ago to celebrate POD’s great uncle Greg’s 70th birthday. We’d not visited the area before as Greg had a cat (we’re allergic) so it was a treat to be able to go and explore too.

The three of us stayed in Airbnb accommodation located in beautiful St Agnes during our time there. Our pretty studio cottage was situated in an idyllic setting with the nearest coastal path just a couple of minutes walk away. We managed a short walk on our first morning and the views from the cliffs were quite spectacular. No wonder our Airbnb hosts had settled here with their family after living in London and Brighton! I’ll be honest, I’d forgotten quite how beautiful Cornwall is.

Great Uncle Greg’s house in Perranporth is just over 4 miles from there and just a short walk from Perranporth Beach, recognised as one of Cornwall’s best. With so many people heading to Cornwall for the birthday celebrations, The Watering Hole (the only bar on the beach in the UK!) provided a great meeting point. It has a prime location in the middle of Perranporth’s 3 mile beach with St Agnes, where we were staying, to the left and Holywell to the right. The Watering Hole began its life as a shack, started by a chap called Bob Job who later moved to Byron Bay in Australia. The business was then passed onto Bob and today it’s a bar and restaurant surrounded by a glorious beach.

Perranporth beach is widely recognised as somewhere to visit for surfing, sailing and good old fashioned seaside fun. Having bought POD a new bucket and spade, she was in her element digging, making sandcastles and running down the dunes. With other children to play with too, she was totally in her element. Much as she loves the countryside, she relishes being at the beach as well. Barefoot in the sand, the sea breeze on her face and not a care in the world. Because Perranporth beach is so vast, it never felt like it was busy. We couldn’t have asked for a better time there – great company, lots of laughs and a brilliant introduction to the local area. Birthday celebrations took place throughout the afternoon and later that evening. It was so nice to spend some time here, I suspect we’ll be back as soon as we can.

Great set of pics that remind me of holidays as a boy exploring Cornwall’s huge beaches and interesting rock pools.
