Matcha Green Tea Powder | Tasty cocktails

The health benefits of green tea have been widely reported from weight loss and stress relief to improved brain function. Matcha is a super-charged version of green tea made from Camellia Sinensis but in fine powder form. People that ingest matcha are consuming the entire leaf rather than brewed water – one glass of matcha tea is the equivalent to 10 glasses of regular green tea!

PODcast IMG_0296

Not only that a study from 2003 published in the Journal of Chromatography found matcha has 137 times more of the powerful antioxidant epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) than other types of green tea. EGCG has been proven effective in the fight against many forms of cancer, HIV, heart disease and a host of other illnesses and diseases.

As matcha is a powder, you can reap the health benefits in all kinds of ways too – from lattes, smoothies and cocktails to poultry, beef and seafood to puddings, bread and dips. With this being our first dabble with matcha green tea powder, making cocktails seemed as good a place as any to put it to the test.

There are three matcha green tea powder cocktails on the menu today – the matcha orange cocktail, the sparkling matcha cocktail and a minty macha mojito. As you’d expect the latter does include rum while the other two alcohol free. All recipes are super easy and make one cocktail.

Matcha Orange Cocktail

1 teaspoon matcha
2½ teaspoons sugar
4 ice cubes
¼ cup hot water
½ cup 100% orange juice (cold)

Place the ice cubes in a tall glass and set aside. In a small bowl combine the matcha and then sugar then add hot water and mix until the sugar has dissolved. Pour the matcha over the ice and let it sit for a minute. Top with orange juice.

PODcast IMG_0347

I wasn’t sure if I’d got this one right initially but you just have to wait for it to settle to get the stripey orange/green effect. There should be a little more orange showing here although I think I was quite generous with my teaspoon of matcha.

PODcast IMG_0337

Sparkling Matcha Cocktail

1 teaspoon matcha
4 ice cubes
2 teaspoons warm water
¾ cup sparkling water
1 lime wedge

In a tall glass stir the warm water and matcha until they’re blended. Add the ice cubes to the glass and slowly add the sparkling water. Stir until blended then squeeze the lime wedge on top.

PODcast IMG_0354

This cocktail was the quickest to make and I was pleasantly surprised at how light and refreshing it was. A real thirst quencher. In case you’re wondering, matcha doesn’t taste like the green tea you’d normally have at all. This is a great alternative to sparkling water and so good for you!

PODcast IMG_0364

Minty Matcha Mojito

1 lime (juiced)
1 tablespoon cane sugar
1 teaspoon matcha
5 fresh mint leaves
Crushed ice
2oz sparkling soda water
1½ oz rum

Add the matcha, mint leaves, sugar and lime juice to the bottom of a glass and use a muddler to mix if you have one. Muddle until the sugar is dissolved and you can smell the mint. Add the crushed ice to the glass then top with soda and rum. Garnish with additional mint leaves if desired. The recipe doesn’t include strawberries but we improvised slightly!

PODcast IMG_0349

I slipped a little with the matcha on this one as it shouldn’t be this dark. That said I did the same with the rum so there was a good balance! A great tasting and nutritious mojito. In fact all three cocktails were delicious and as someone that’s never used Matcha Green Tea Powder before, I was thrilled. The POD Father is already asking me to make him a matcha latte with warm milk for breakfast too.

Toyz World | BeBop Bouncy Castle review

As POD’s birthday is on Christmas Day, last Summer we had an ‘un-birthday’ party for her. We were treated to glorious sunshine and blue skies, perfect for a BBQ and lots of fun in the garden. Everyone had a great time and it meant POD could have a entire day that was just about her.

The B&W Photography Project | Week #56

Hello everyone, welcome to week #56 of the Black and White Photography Project. Thank you so much to those of you that joined in last time.

This week I thought I’d share a few boat photographs. I took a few too many recently but it was hard not to watching them come and go on the waterfront. We had days when the sea was so incredibly calm and others when there was definitely a lot of wind in people’s sails!

PODcast IMG_2735 B&W

POD got to go in a sailing boat for the first time, she even had a little go too. Much concentration was needed as you can see from the photograph below!

Exploring the world of macro photography

Capturing flowers has always been something I’ve enjoyed but over recent years, I’ve really developed a passion for macro photography. The world of floral is fascinating and it’s wonderful to really appreciate what’s around you.

I love the grandeur of a public garden landscaped to perfection and the grace a field brings – whether lavender, oilseed rape or poppies. But there are a wealth of opportunities closer to home too. Capturing a yellow sunflower head against a blue sky for example makes a great photograph. For me though, the excitement is deep rooted in what’s beyond that.

PODcast IMG_0248

The most interesting part of a flower is the inside. I love to get as close as possible so I can capture this magical world and let others see it. I suspect it’s a bit of an addiction photographing a specific part of a flower.

PODcast IMG_0214 other

The core of the flower delivers such an astounding level of detail though not to mention colour, texture and shape. Mother nature is very clever.

PODcast IMG_0245

I use a 60mm lens for my macro photography these days but there are many ways to take close-up photographs. From camera phones with attachments to compact and bridge cameras, mirrorless cameras and of course SLR’s. This post summaries some of the options.

What I enjoy about macro photography is discovering something that would otherwise be missed by the naked eye. Like this rain drop on the cusp of falling.

What’s on the menu at San Lucianu?

As POD’s Great Grandparents would say we’re “good trencher-men” a phrase for hearty eaters that goes back to medieval times when the trencher was a wooden plate. Although we’ll eat pretty much anything that’s put in front of us we’ve also been known to frequent dining establishments owned by sweary and unclothed celebrity chefs so we know how good food can be.

Costa Verde, Corsica | Cervione

Located in Corsica’s Costa Verde is Cervione, an enchanting village with stone houses, cobbled alleyways and astonishing views. This little-known part of Corsica is situated just half an hour from second largest city Bastia.

We spent an afternoon in Cervione with our four-year-old daughter POD. We fell in love with it not long after we got out of the taxi! One side of the main street is lined with quirky cafes and the other spectacular panoramic views. It’s no wonder it was nicknamed ‘the balcony by the sea’.

PODcast - Cervione collage 1On arrival we headed towards the bell tower to begin exploring. At the top of the cobbled alleyway was a charming square and Cathedrale de Saint Erasme – a former Roman Catholic Cathedral and a national monument of France. It was the seat of the Bishop of Aleria and is today one of the Corsica’s earliest baroque cathedrals.

Inside is a marbled black and white floor, wooden stalls and an impressive organ. The domed ceiling is most impressive and you almost lost your balance taking in its detail. POD’s not been in a cathedral of this size before and spent the majority of our time in there looking up with her mouth open.

PODcast - Cervione collage 2Outside we noticed swallows had made nests along the front of the cathedral. We presumed this were the case because there were so many swallows in Cervione. To the left of the cathedral was a doorway, almost hidden, into a quaint looking restaurant. If you walked past, you may even miss it completely if you didn’t know it was there. A local cafe beckoned, with the temperature pushing thirty degrees and no sea air, we were in need of some refreshments.

PODcast - Cervione collage 3We missed the Museum of Cervione which is near the cathedral but we had plenty to keep ourselves occupied. Back in the main street we found a double door, with an impressive lion door knocker, slightly ajar. Inside were two stone pillars, a beautiful ceiling and steps leading to what we presumed to be flats. The entrance was not in the best condition but you could see it must have been very grand at some point.
PODcast - Cervione collage 4Below the main street was the prettiest playground I think I’ve ever seen. Boasting the most stunning views, it was almost like a walled garden set in the mountain. Above it were more stone buildings with shutters and the clock tower was once again visible.
PODcast - Cervione collage 5POD loved the playground and took great delight in trying everything. She wasn’t very happy when we had to leave although the blow was softened slightly when we spotted a lizard close-by.

PODcast - Cervione collage 6

Everywhere you look in Cervione is something that makes you go wow. Whether it’s the lonesome house set in the hillside, the chiming of the bell tower or the magnificent views, it’s a special place.

PODcast - Cervione collage 7Thankfully there are cafes aplenty too so when the heat gets a bit too much, you can stop, grab a beer and just take it all in.
