The B&W Photography Project | Week #86

Hello folks, welcome to week #86 of the Black and White Photography Project. If you’re new here, this is a really simple project to get involved with – just link up any monochrome photograph. With words or without, it’s entirely up to you. Your images don’t need to be from the past week either so you can pick and choose what you want to share. If you new to black and white photography, check out these tips which will give you a steer on what you can do. Most important is just having fun with it! Don’t forget you can also share your photograph on Instagram using #bwphotoproject – or just join in there if you prefer.

This photograph was taken when we travelled up the Opal Coast in France. We’d not been in the Pas de Calais area long when we discovered this gem at the top of a ploughed field. It was such a beautiful sight. I only wish we’d been able to have a little nose inside to see how this immaculate looking building had been made a home.

Photographs from East Head, West Sussex

Having recently spent time on the West Sussex coast at surfers favourite Blacklesham Bay and the stunning West Wittering, another local gem we discovered is the wonderful East Head. Managed by the National Trust, it’s a fast moving natural sand and shingle spit set amongst a rare and fragile sand-dune habitat. At low tide you might even find fossilised shells dating back 53 million years. Situated a stones throw away from West Wittering (at the far end of the beach car park), East Head’s distinct habitat provides a home for a huge range of unusual plants and wildlife. It’s also been used as a film location for the likes of ‘The Eagle Has Landed’, ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ and ‘Waking the Dead’.

Heading in the right direction

We always thought POD would thrive when she started reception last September as she’d been ready for school for months. We’d made the decision to keep her at nursery until she was four – three seemed way too young for her to start. Hindsight is a wonderful thing however and had we known what the last six months would entail we might have done things differently. That said, there’s a big difference between nursery care (from 8am to 6pm) and pre-school (10am to 2pm) – the latter just wouldn’t have worked for us.

The Alphabet Project | Y is for yacht

Welcome to the Alphabet Photography Project and letter Y! Thank you to everyone that joined in last week.

While tempting to opt for young, I thought I’d share this photograph of a yacht. Not mine sadly but one of the many that featured at the Southampton Boat Show last year. The event showcases 600 exhibitors with hundreds of legendary boats on display including 330 at the show’s marina alone. It’s one of the largest built in Europe with over 2km of pontoons and 100 boats made their debut.

The B&W Photography Project | Week #85

Hello folks, welcome to week #85 of the Black and White Photography Project. If you’re new here, this is a really simple project to get involved with – just link up any monochrome photograph. This photograph was taken at Leadenhall Market. It’s a busy part of London during the week but at the weekends the entire area is pretty quiet. I was in the city for a travel and street photography course which was excellent. The weather wasn’t on our side but that doesn’t matter so much when you learn loads does it?

Meeting the New Forest ponies

We’re always talking about going to the New Forest although it’s only recently we’ve paid the area a visit. In doing so we discovered we’re only an hour away so we’re kind of kicking ourselves now. What fools! One of the things I love about the New Forest are the ponies that roam freely amid this stunning landscape. It’s quite a sight especially if you’re in the car and spot them sitting under a tree having a rest as we did. There was nowhere to stop at that point but we hoped to find more elsewhere.

Gazillion Tornado – the mega bubble blower

We’re big fans of bubbles in the Dove household. POD adores them and her giggling as she darts about popping them is so infectious! It’s an easy way to make a five year old very happy although I rather enjoy bubbles myself if I’m honest! The Funrise Gazillion Tornado (available from Tesco) is a mega bubble blower which is battery operated and pumps out hundreds of bubbles a minute. POD has wanted a bubble machine for ages so she was almost beside herself when she saw it!

Snackeez from Character Options

What with POD’s gymnastics, drama and swimming classes, there’s regularly a need to recharge while on the move. More often that not it’s a case of grabbing a bottle of water and a banana although the two do get separated at times. We’ve lost a few bottles in the past and find ourselves scrabbling for change to purchase water from a vending machine. But those clever folk at Character Options have devised an innovative means of keeping POD’s drink and snack together. Snackeez is genius! It’s a cup with a flip top container for snacks so it’s perfect for days out, classes and for use in the car too.

The Alphabet Project | X is for xanthophyll

Welcome to the Alphabet Photography Project and letter X! Thank you to everyone that joined in last week.

I remember in the first series of the Alphabet Project finding this letter particularly easy but only because I had an x-ray! Three series later it’s not quite the same although I find the process of searching for interesting words beginning with X rather fun! Xanthophyll is what causes leaves to go yellow in the autumn although I do seem to capture more of the reds and the oranges. The Acers get me every time!

There’s a bit of an animal theme going on this week following a recent visit to Whipsnade Zoo. It was a particularly chilly day but we were thrilled to see these absolute beauties – their markings look pretty special in monochrome. I do love to have a tinker with black and white, the tiger looks especially striking.
