We took advantage of our RHS membership for this week’s post and visited their flagship garden at Wisley.
Based in Surrey, it’s renowned for being a world class garden that captures the imagination with richly planted borders and luscious rose gardens.
What struck me immediately was how different it was to our last visit – less than two months ago. The pond we’d previously seen encircled by ducks was full of Waterlilies and surrounded by fabulous scenery including a beautiful rock garden.
An adjoining bridge, we walked across with a buggy before, was wrapped in Wisteria. I was taken aback by the change – it was so picturesque it resembled a postcard. Even with a toddler in tow, it oozed peace and tranquility. And it smelt absolutely amazing.
Butterflies fluttered nearby and bees buzzed round brightly coloured blooms. Although I got a shot of a butterfly, it wasn’t my day for capturing a bee inside a huge red and yellow Lily. It was one of those occasions I wished my camera had been on auto focus!
The canal and Loggia looked more breathtaking than usual on a sunny day. The adjacent walled garden was a perfect place to stop and take it all in amidst a sea of purple and white flowers.
The huge cathedral-like Glasshouse showcased a mind-blowing collection of plants across three climatic zones. These included difficult to grow, rare and endangered species and Orchids. A selection are in the last part of the slideshow.
It was a great afternoon that also encompassed a peek at the Garden Photographer of the Year exhibition, a Fuchsia display and a WI Scarecrow Trail.
We’re linking this post up with How Does Your Garden Grow? which this week is being hosted here on this blog.
How spectacular are your pictures, the orchids are just amazing and I love the pond, I could sit on that bridge all day x
Thank you Nichola – it was a fabulous visit 🙂
oh wow!! what beautiful grounds! and what a mix of flowers. it’s like west virginia and miami for me. because i saw some tropical flowers and airplants in there as well. love it! thank you for hosting. 🙂
Thank you Claudia. I loved the photos you’d taken in West Virginia. Amazing flowers in the glasshouse at Wisley 🙂
Gorgeous gardens and flowers, and beautiful photos & slideshow. I’m just starting to get to grips with knowing what the flowers are out in my garden, without throwing tropical ones I have no idea about it into the mix! Thanks for hosting this week, too x
Thank you Jocelyn. If it’s any consolation I’m just learning too 🙂
Wow, beautiful place. The bridge picture looks like a Monet. The plants are amazing. A place I would love to go to. Thanks for hosting this week.
Thank you Emma – it’s wonderful there. The area around the bridge was so peaceful. I could have loitered around there for ages 🙂
Stunning. I love that bridge of wisteria. Very Monet-esque!
Thank you Katie – the bridge is wonderful 🙂
That looks like a wonderful place, I must put it on my list of gardens to visit. My ex-boyfriend is a multiple-times Gold winner at Chelsea, in our youth we loved growing our own fruit & veg, I knew that boy would go far!
Definitely do – it’s amazing and clearly a different experience each time. I’ll do a post on the rest of it over the coming days. Sounds like you had an interesting time with that ex-boyfriend. How exciting to grow your own fruit and veg 🙂
Stunning pics, Charly!
Thank you Susie 🙂
Beautiful
Thank you Leyla 🙂
I visited Wisley a couple of years ago, it was lovely. Although I remember seeing some tomato plants growing there and realised that I needed to try much much harder with pruning my suckers. Mine looked like savage beasts in comparison.
Aww bless you I’m sure they didn’t, your veg was fabulous! Wisley seems to change every time we’re there. Really nice to go on such a beautiful day 🙂
This is the reason why we need to get out of our London flat and back into the Surrey countryside. Great photos and colour…
You so do Jamie – Wisley was just incredible. And only a pootle up the road 🙂
I’m not a fan of bridges but that one is gorgeous. Beautiful photos 🙂
Aww thank you – it is a fabulous bridge 🙂
[…] We spent a lot of time enjoying the sun in July. It was the time for covering a wriggling toddler in suncream and keeping cool. We also explored Stoke Park and the wonderful Loseley Park for the first time. And returned to RHS Wisley. […]
