POD’s hair, or lack of it, has always been the topic of conversation. Having appeared with very little, what she did gain after that point quickly fell out. Except for a mini beard at the back of her head. While the mini beard continued to grow, the rest of her head remained bald. Any hair she did gain rubbed off ย in her moses basket.
We were delighted when the mini beard fell out and it was replaced with fresh new fuzz. But then that disappeared too. Each time new growth appeared it was a different shade.
When POD’s hair did finally grow, she sported a fine mullet – limited hair on the top and a bit of length at the back. It was thin and wispy.
These past few months have seen POD’s blonde hair not only grow but become curly at the back. We started to grow her fringe out but as she rarely keeps a hair clip in, she spent most of her time swatting it back off her face with her hand.
So this weekend, at the age of nearly two and a half, we took her for her first proper haircut. Initially it was a disaster. She refused to sit in the chair and arched her back so she could slide out of it. The ‘cape’ sent her into a complete tizzy. Even sitting on Daddy’s knee, she wriggled and squirmed and made it quite clear it wasn’t a happening thing.
We returned after lunch with a different toddler to the one they’d seen previously. She was cautious and the ‘cape’ did get yanked off initially. When she saw the mirror reality dawned this might be quite a fun place. As you’d expect she needed distracting but on the whole she was very well behaved. Aided perhaps by a new pair of shoes on her feet – gorgeous red patent ones.
As it was spur of the moment visit to my hairdresser, I didn’t have my camera with me. POD’s locks of hair were put into an envelope for us though which was a nice sentiment. It’s been a long journey but this week my magic moment is POD having her first proper haircut.

How lovely – that first hair cut! Little A, now three, doesn’t have very much hair either, it’s only really starting to grow now. May take her for her first haircut next time it’s needed. POD has a proper thick mop there! x
Bless her – it’s only just started to grow recently and she’s got fresh fuzz coming underneath! I’d hold off as long as you can, it made her look older!
Great pictures. She looks like she’s being angelic. When I took my son, he screamed and threw himself on the floor half way through. They had to get the clippers on him to even it out as best they could while he writhed like a dying fish. Such a proud moment.
This was the second visit to the hairdressers that day – she was better on this occasion! Your experience sounds like our first visit earlier that day ๐
YAY! i so remember Joshua’s he we so much better than i thought he would of been he actually laughed all the way through it!
POD has really beautiful hair honey xx
Thanks for linking up with #MagicMoments x
You’re so lucky Joshua was well behaved, POD screamed so much the first time we had to leave! She has great hair now bless her ๐
What a gorgeous memory. It makes me wish that I had my blog for times such as this….alas these days have passed *sigh*. If it’s any consolation, none of mine had very much hair either but have beautiful locks now (well some of them anyway!) x
Thank you Suzanne – I’m with you on starting earlier though. I’ve got a whole two years I’m missing! At least we’ll have something now though. Good to hear yours didn’t have much either ๐
Great account of POD’s first visit to the hairdresser (I remember a little one who was fairly wriggly in the barber’s chair!) Where’s the picture of the end result though?
Aww thank you – she was much better behaved the second time. Once occupied obviously! The hairdresser threw me by saying she’d get an envelope for her locks so I didn’t get a picture of the end result ๐
Seriously sweet, got quite teary when J had his first cut! It looks like she will be taking hairdressers and shoes in her stride in the future!
I’m not surprised, it’s emotional isn’t it. I would have lost the plot I think if she’d not been screaming the first time. Luckily some lunch re-fueled me enough! I’m sure she’ll get used to it ๐
This is a gorgeous post! ‘Mini-beard’ – love it. I know exactly what you’re talking about. Mine didn’t have one, but I’ve seen a few. She’s got such beautifully thick hair now.
Thank you! She had a proper mini beard at the back of her head. Bald as a coot elsewhere. It was weird when that grew and nothing else appeared! You’re lucky yours avoided it, I really felt for her although to be fair she just wanted food then ๐
What a wonderful moment. The first haircut. Hopefully she will be able to read this post in years to come and smile at the memory. A really nice post.
Thank you – it was an emotional one although I didn’t embarrass myself thankfully! This was always going to be a special moment, it’s been so long coming ๐
Such a sweet post. I wish blogging existed when my daughter was a toddler. I would have loved to capture these moments online. It is such a special moment ~ the first haircut. My daughter has now grown up (20 years old ~ yikes!) I don’t know where the time has gone but I am enjoying reading about other mother’s journeys as their children reach milestones. Wishing you the best.
Thank you so much Gina that’s really kind of you. I know what you mean with milestones, we’ve missed a fair few but hope to catch some in the future. I can’t believe you have a 20 year old daughter!!! Thank you for stopping by ๐
How lovely, I still have Monkey’s first locks in his memory book. I’m lucky that a friend cuts my hair at home, so he’s seen Mummy have the chop a lot, and he’ll quite happily sit and have his hair cut. I know of friends who have absolute nightmare’s with their children #PoCoLo
That’s a great idea – we don’t have a memory book yet. That must be really useful having a hairdresser at yours. POD was dreadful the first time so I’m so glad we cut our losses then went back!
Such a special moment – I can imagine even more so for a little girl! She looks like she has beautiful hair now even if it has taken a while!! My son, at nearly 5, still causes a scene when we go to the hairdressers!
It was an amazing moment – a long time coming though! I suspect future visits are going to be a challenge just like yours ๐
Oh bless her! My girl loves the hairdresser and begs to go and be made a fuss of – its a slippery slope though! Thanks for linking up to #PoCoLo x
I’m hoping POD will enjoy it over time – she is a girl after all. Fingers crossed! Lovely to meet you at BritMums ๐
Red patent shoes are a sure way to keep a toddler in the hairdresser’s chair. Too bad I have a boy. Great post and photos ๐ #PoCoLo
I love the shoes!!!! Waited a long time to get red ones. I think we were lucky we had those as a distraction ๐
Neither of my boys had any hair to speak of until they were well past one! And I had to cut it myself until they were about 3 or so as they were scared of the barber! The wee girl has a mop of curly hair, have no idea where it’s come from! Love your descriptions of POD’s journey to having hair! #PoCoLo
It’s a funny old process isn’t it. Nice to hear yours didn’t have much initially. I used to get jealous of babies with loads of hair as POD just had her head beard! Hers is going curly too, weird how that happens ๐
[…] was the month I got my I got myย maxi dress stuck in an escalator! POD had her first haircutย and weย saw pigs, goats and ice-cream at the Surrey County […]
