We’re so lucky there are so many National Trust properties in and around Surrey. And becoming members means we can explore each of them as many times as we like.
There have been a few National Trust posts on PODcast already including Fairies and Bluebells, Maoris and a Secret Garden and Discovering Box Hill.
Poleseden Lacey is somewhere we’d not had the opportunity to visit until recently. Located in Great Bookham, near Dorking, this beautiful country estate was owned by Mrs Greville, a well-known hostess, for her to entertain royalty, politicians and the best of Edwardian society. The house contains her fabulous collection of art and ceramics.
King George VI and Queen Elizabeth also had part of their honeymoon at Polesden Lacey in 1923.
Set in spectacular views of the Surrey Hills countryside, the immense estate offers geocaching and waymarked walks. As we were without Daddy, we opted to pay the gardens a visit first. Walking alongside the house entrance and South terrace we were able to take in the most stunning of views.
We passed through a Winter garden, orchard and frameyard before reaching the magnificent rose garden. Walled gardens always have a mystical charm about them. Given we’d timed our arrival with the end of the Summer, it was amazing to see it looking so beautiful too.
Even the herbaceous border looked magnificent. POD enjoyed running around, peering at the views through the large iron gates and talking to statues. Polesden Lacey also offers a loggia, sunken garden and kitchen garden.
After we’d taken that all in, we took a walk in the grounds towards the estate’s woodland. We also discovered a bird hide which POD was hugely excited about although her noisy chatter meant the birds stayed away!
There’s something rather wonderful about Autumn smells and that damp feeling underfoot. You’ll see from the slideshow, Polesden Lacey is a absolute gem – we’ll definitely be back for some geocaching!
We’re linking this post up with Country Kids at Coombe Mill and How Does Your Garden Grow? at Mammasaurus.
I used to live in Surrey before I moved to Devon and did manage to squeeze in a visit to PL before we moved. It is a fabulous place. We are also NT members and I am enjoying the discovery of new places down here now. Lovely photographs x
How wonderful although it must be fantastic living in Devon. We’ve moved from London to Surrey! Such a fabulous place, really loved it there ๐
Wow! What an impressive garden, it looks like a lovely place with lots of nooks and crannies to explore! I bet all the lavender smells amazing when it’s in full flower. Same for the rose garden.
It’s amazing Gemma, you’d love it. Was disappointed we didn’t get there when everything was in full bloom but it still looked incredible. Such breathtaking views too ๐
I love that part of the world. Definitely somewhere to take the children. Great choice to write a post on and lovely photos.
It’s great Jamie, so much green space for POD. Thank you ๐
Such great photos Charly, I love the walled garden – that circle wall one especially. Just lovely, I could spend hours there just walking about.Such great places to take younger children too, so much to see and such space to run around in. I’m hoping to book myself in on an Autumnal colours walk locally with the National Trust this weekend, can’t wait!
Thanks so much for joining in again x
Thank you Annie. Such a wonderful place, the walled garden was incredible. Was walking round with my mouth agog – when I wasn’t chasing POD obviously! Love that she can visit all these fabulous places. What’s the autumnal walk? That sounds amazing :))
We loved Polesden Lacey when we went recently. I really liked the tunnel made with trees but found it impossible to photograph. Looks like you found more than we did on our visit!
It’s just fabulous isn’t it Laura. The tree tunnel was lovely – I had some heads in my way though! Took way too many photographs. Definitely be back for some geocaching ๐
Impressive garden, it looks beautiful. POD looks like she had a great time
POD had a great time running around! Really beautiful garden, just love walled gardens. The woodland and scenery were spectacular too ๐
you are so lucky! i am so envious of the fact that you are wearing boots and a coat already. it is still so hot here. beautiful pics as always. xo
Thank you! Was just commenting on how I’d love to be checking out Miami. Funny how we crave for what we don’t have. It’s still quite mild but it’s been a bit wet so definitely welly weather!
Lovely! I would love to go wandering through National Trust properties every day!
Love National Trust properties too. Wish I had more time to amble around them. Seems we have loads near us which is super exciting – even more than I thought ๐
Such lovely photos Charly. I still adore that wall with a hole picture so much. Oh to have a walled garden like – it speaks to my inner-hermit xx
Thank you – it’s great the hole picture, delighted it worked in the slideshow. Walled gardens are just amazing aren’t they, just love them ๐
Beautiful. Love the herbaceous border, always one of my favourites in a formal garden. Gorgeous photos of POD too ๐
Thank you Sara – it’s a fabulous place. Can’t wait to go back again ๐
That looks gorgeous-as you may well know already, I do love the National Trust just a touch! Geochaching is on our list too.
Thank you – loved your NT visit too! We must hatch a plan for geocaching, looks like great fun ๐
Looks a gorgeous place to visit. I do love a walled garden, too ๐
It’s just fabulous Jocelyn, the walled garden is something else ๐
What a beautiful place – just love the picture with Pod and all that lavender – gorgeous! X
It’s a fabulous place, just so beautiful – the gardens and the surrounding area ๐
We are in Surrey and love all the NT properties too. Went to Polesden Lacey not long ago, and then Claremont more recently – and made it to Box Hill this week!
It’s amazing to have so many NT properties locally isn’t it. We’ve not visited Claremont yet, may well be next on our list!
I don’t think I’ve been to this property. The gardens look beautiful.
It’s wonderful Cheryl, wish we’d been sooner! Incredible views too!
That wall with the circle is a real feature. It does look like beautiful gardens. I am ashamed to say I loved in Surrey for seven years and yet hardly visited any of the lovely places you are taking Pod. This one looks a real gem. A perfect CountryKids garden.
It’s such a fabulous place Fiona. Moving from London to Surrey and owning a toddler I’m sure helps get us out and about ๐
I’ve been admiring these photos of yours on Instagram, so beautiful! I do love these landscaped gardens, we’ve got some marvellous ones near us at an NT site, there are different garden ‘rooms’ and The Boy’s favourite is the stage garden with a stage and entrances on and off through hedgerows.
Nipping over from Country Kids.
You’re very kind, I’m trying to be better with Instagram although I’ve now realised Pinterest is suffering. Gah! National Trust properties are just fabulous, The Boy’s favourite sounds wonderful ๐
What a beautiful place. Lots to see and explore. I bet that would make for a gorgeous wedding venue.
Good point Laura, would make an amazing wedding venue. The scenery is just incredible. Fabulous place ๐
Such a great place. I love the photos with the trees leading the eye down the path, and the circle brick wall making a frame.
It’s just fabulous Joy, so much green space as well as the beautiful gardens. POD loved it there even if she was too noisy for the birds!
Not been there for years, it’s lovely isn’t it
It’s wonderful Mary – really beautiful ๐
Charley this looks beautiful we ought to go and visit more got em those that are local to us
You should visit more Jaime, POD loves running around and exploring. This one is fabulous – although all the ones we’ve seen are to be honest ๐

Stunning photos and learnt such a lot from this post. Thinking of becoming National Trust members as there are so many interesting places to visit – I think we could trust Lucas………
If you have properties near you you should definitely do it Cathie. We’ve already paid for our membership. Lucas would love it ๐
Thank you for sharing those photos and all the brief histories you mentioned:) Would love to visit the place some time soon!
You really should, it’s fabulous. Beautiful garden and surrounding woodland ๐
Oh wow Charly such stunning pictures, what a place. In my fantasy world I live there ha! I love the smiley Pod picture too, it is just adorable. Apologies for taking forever to comment, my internet dongle is a bit rubbish!
