Being adventurous folk, we love the great outdoors. Of course the winter months do require a little more effort (and clothing!) but those cobwebs don’t blow away by themselves. Last weekend the forecast was for heavy rain but we were starting to go stir crazy indoors. Added to which POD was desperate to go to the beach. She’d been asking when we’re going on holiday every day since she broke up from school! If you took away the monsoon outside, it was the next best thing. Okay maybe not.
Nevertheless we left Surrey equipped with waterproofs, wellies and probably a few too many spare clothes. We played a game in the car to see who could spot a gap in the clouds first. An interesting idea given the windscreen wipers were on full at that point and visibility was poor. The upside being the roads were pretty clear of traffic. I almost turned back at one point but the happy face beaming back at me in the rear view mirror meant we had to at least try. Besides Daddy had a little work to do.
We arrived in Sussex much faster than when we’d visited in the summer although hardly surprising. There was barely a soul in the flooded car park so we chatted about wizards while we ate Marmite sandwiches. It was still raining heavily when we arrived but ten minutes later it suddenly stopped. Just like that.
Wellies on, hats in place and coats over our noses, we raced out of the car and to West Wittering beach like speed demons. Well we would have done if the bitterly cold winds had not been blowing in the opposite direction to us! The beach was deserted except for a couple of kite surfers and a handful of dog walkers. No-one in their right mind was going out today. Except us it seemed. Such a contrast to when we’d visited before and the temperature had hit 28 degrees.
I’ve learnt over the last five years that you do funny things for your children. Admittedly they’re not always funny. Seeing the joy in POD’s face when she climbed a sandbank and shouted “woo hoo” at the top of her voice made the drive there worthwhile. Even if that’s all she got to do before we had to leave.
But that was the strange thing. As the rain stopped the clouds had parted a little to reveal a bright blue sky. It wasn’t much but seeing the sun glimmer on the sea meant we could take it all in that little bit longer. Running down the sandbanks was fun in itself but there were giant puddles to explore, shells to admire and an incoming tide to run away from. Although we didn’t get to chase a rainbow, we certainly got to see nature at it’s very best. And more importantly, see the look of pure joy on POD’s face. Sometimes the best things in life are free, you just have to take a chance and look for them.
We’re over the moon to be a Finalist in the photography category of the MAD Blog Awards 2016. We’d really love it if you could please vote for us. Thank you so much đ
WOW!! These pictures are amazing, you’re obviously getting on well with that lovely new camera of yours. The one of Pod jumping on the beach is my favourite. We love going to the beach at this time of year too, it has such a magical, moody feel does’ t it!? Also, love the thought of you all eating marmite sandwiches in the car, it’s so British and nostalgic. Thank you so much for linking up to #MyCapturedMoment xx
I totally agree with you – and it’s sometimes the kids who make us do things which end up being kind of magical. I love the beach/seaside in winter – we went just a few weeks ago too and had a great time. These pictures are utterly wonderful too.
I do love a deserted beach in the winter. Beautiful photos and definitely a good idea to get out of the house! x
Beautiful post. I bet this will be a day out you’ll remember for a long, long time. Beaches are magical in the winter.
As usual, amazing photo đ I agree with you so much about going out in winter. It is so important, and often ends up being fun, but on the other hand, it is so hard to actually get up and leave the house… I am so happy you had such a great day and enjoyed it so much, though I have to admit I really do prefer my beach walks in the summer đ
I much prefer visiting the beach in the winter as you quite literally have it to yourself so can enjoy it. Loving the pictures!!
Gorgeous. I love a beach in winter! Almost more than I do in the summer.
There is something amazing about beaches in winter. We have not been as much as we should have done. I can cope with the cold, but the insistent rain makes it unbearable
Wow Charly! These pictures are stunning… It sounds like you had an amazing day. How lovely that the whole day turned around for you… Think of what you might have missed!!! Absolutely beautiful. Thanks for linking up with #savouringtheseason
Looks so peaceful. I’d love to walk along a deserted beach like that… not something we ever do in the winter. I definitely want to take the kids to a beach though at some point soon, like this one. Stunning pics x
Amazing photos, love the jumping one. You have inspired me to get out on a river walk today x
What lovely pictures! I must admit that even though we live near the beach we don’t go there loads in the winter – I am not very good with cold weather!!
I do love a winter beach, all lovely photos
Your photos are beautiful. Beachtime in the winter is the absolute best, I love it!
We love the beach – we have just had so much rain đ Your photos are stunning. Kaz x
These are stunning photos. I absolutely love the beach in winter, even if sometimes you have to face bitter winds!! It sounds like it was a great adventure for the two of you as well x

[…] We spent many years living in London before moving to Surrey in 2010. Five year old POD has grown up living in the countryside and we’re always out exploring the best of what the Surrey Hills and beyond has to offer. We’ve discovered we’re only an hour away from one of the best beaches in the country – West Wittering. […]
