Alphabet Project | I is for ice

Thank you to everyone that joined the Alphabet Photography Project over the past week with their letter H.

Back in December we took the Eurotunnel to Calais and drove to Bruges. While there we heard about an Ice Sculpture Festival which is the only one of its kind in Europe. On this occasion it was a World first, a unique interpretation of a Disney film called ‘Frozen’. A comedy adventure we now know very well indeed!

The icy wonderland was created by artists from 11 countries using 250 tonnes of ice. It took 5 weeks to pull together this remarkable exhibition in -6 degree temperatures.

Alphabet Project | G is for grotto

Thank you to everyone that joined the Alphabet Photography Project for letter F last week.

This week I bring you part of the grotto at Painshill Park in Surrey. Following an extensive restoration, it is said to be the finest stalactite grotto in Europe. Hundreds of thousands of crystals including calcite, gypsum, quartz and fluorite were used to re-create what really is an extraordinary folly set in an 18th century landscape garden.

Alphabet Project | D is for daredevil

Thank you to everyone that joined the Alphabet Photography Project last week. Such a great selection for the letter C.

Derelict would have been a nice challenge for the letter D but it wasn’t to be. We discovered a disused brickworks only to find it was no longer accessible and completely overgrown. D should be for Dove but POD displaying her daredevil skills by doing a star jump in the sky is far more interesting!

Alphabet Project | C is for candid

Thank you to everyone that joined the Alphabet Photography Project last week. It was great to see what you’d chosen for your letter B.

This photograph was taken with a 250mm lens, POD didn’t know I was there. She’d run over to a bench in the woods where she just had an impromptu lie down. Perhaps she felt a renewed sense of freedom given it was the first time this year she wasn’t in layers. Whatever the reason it was a wonderful moment captured. This week C is for Candid.

Bubbles ended up the preferred option for letter B after POD put in so much effort. She blew with such vigour it almost looked like she might explode!

Alphabet Project | A is for abandoned

A photograph of an abandoned bridge over a lake recently caught my attention. It would have made an intriguing first capture for this project but it wasn’t to be. The decaying bridge and the conservatory it leads to form part of Witley Park. This private estate is also home to Britain’s most extraordinary folly – a ballroom located 40ft beneath the surface of a lake!

Welcome to The Alphabet Photography Project #alphabetphoto.

Continuing with the abandoned theme, this photograph was taken at the Chilworth Gunpowder Mills in Surrey. Established in 1626, it was one of the largest mills in the country and the most important supplier of gunpowder to the government. These solid millstone rocks were once used for grinding gunpowder. The old mill is now a designated monument having closed nearly a hundred years ago.

The Alphabet Photography Project

If you read this post you will know there are three new photography projects coming to PODcast. Each has a specific focus with the overall aim to improve our photography skills as a collective. And have a bit of fun!

First up is the Alphabet Photography Project #alphabetphoto

When it starts and how it works

On Wednesday 14th May 2014, you’ll be able to link up your ‘A is for…’ photograph. The body of your post can be free of words or if you prefer you can include a short description. The theme can be interpreted in any way you choose.

A is for… might be a photograph of an apple for example. But it could also be an object that resembles the letter A (like a pattern in a gate) or a photograph of the letter A using props. The letter A might could even be an adjective.

You will be able to link you post up on PODcast and/or share it on Instagram and Facebook using the #alphabetphoto hashtag.

Inspiration

To keep those creative juices flowing, each week you will be provided with ideas for the following week’s letter. So to start us off, here are some prompts for the letter A:

Apple, acorn, ant, aerobics, art, abstract, architecture, abandoned, arches, animals, amphibian, angel, Autumn, adventurous, alert, attractive, average, angel, award, ape, apricot, April, animal, August, aquatic, autograph, amusement, attic, athlete, aubergine, artichoke, archery, arrow, anchor, arm, aeroplane, attitude, anxious, anticipation.

New photography projects

There are three new photography projects kicking off on PODcast from May. They’re just for fun but and will hopefully allow all us budding photographers the chance to explore our creativity.

The What’s The Story? Linky is all about sharing the story behind a photograph. These new projects focus on developing particular skill sets as well as looking at photography in different ways and learning new techniques from inspirational photographers.

The Alphabet Photography Project

The #alphabetphoto project will be every Wednesday from 14th May, kicking off with “A is for…” and working through the entire alphabet. The theme can be interpreted in a different way each week.

It might be an image of an object (ie; M is for mango), an object that resembles a letter (ie; a car wheel might be O), an adjective to describe a scene (ie; Q is for quiet) or a letter created from props.

“E is for…” might be a photograph of the London Eye

PODcast IMG_5843

or “T is for…” might be tunnel. This one just happened to have POD racing through it!

The Macro Photography Project

The #macrophoto project will be live every Saturday from June. Macro photography fascinates me so I’m looking forward to experimenting with close-ups, seeking inspiration from the more experienced and sharing what works.

The B&W Photography Project

Tuesday will be the #bwphotoproject which is all about experimenting and improving black & white photography. The emphasis will be on discovering what images work well in black & white and how to achieve the best results.

PODcast - POD yoghurt

Photographs with varying contrasts and textures will no doubt feature – as will images of POD! The B&W photography project kicks off in June.
