Everybody Loves Butterflies

Everybody Loves Butterflies is a great book about a Little Caterpillar that doesn’t want to turn into a butterfly. Although his brothers and sisters had turned into butterflies, and he knew he would too, Little Caterpillar wanted to stay a caterpillar forever.

PODcast IMG_4734 edit

The Little Caterpillar’s friends try to explain to him that change is good. A dragonfly said butterflies are all the colours of the rainbow but the Little Caterpillar thought that would just make him dizzy.

PODcast IMG_4747

A bee said the Little Caterpillar would be able to eat “deeeliciious” nectar from flowers but the caterpillar liked the satisfying crunch of leaves. An ant told him he’d see the world but the caterpillar said he was happy where he was.

PODcast IMG_4750

A robin mentioned butterflies could fly high in the sky but the caterpillar said the sky seemed an awfully long way away. A spider added that everybody loves butterflies. When the spider asked who loves caterpillars, the Little Caterpillar replied “I do”.

PODcast IMG_4760

The Little Caterpillar went to see the owl as he was the oldest and wisest animal he knew. He asked if he could stay a caterpillar for ever and ever. The wise owl explained the caterpillar would still be him just with wings. That night the Little Caterpillar snuggled down deep and had a long, long sleep.

PODcast IMG_4769

When he woke, he had wings – glorious wings with red and purple spots! He ate nectar from the flowers, flew loop-the-loop and said “I want to be a butterfly for ever and ever” as he waved to his friends.

PODcast IMG_4772

We absolutely adored Everyone Loves Butterflies. Not only is it a great story about the life cycle of the butterfly (or “butt-fly”), it’s a wonderful read and beautifully illustrated. Our three year old has enjoyed hearing about the Little Caterpillar but also likes to comment on the other creatures that feature in the book too.

Everybody Loves Butterflies has given her a better understanding of the process from caterpillar to butterfly. Rather handily there is a page explaining the life cycle of a butterfly at the end of the story. This has enabled us to talk through what’s involved in more detail. It’s especially poignant as we saw butterflies in the Glasshouse at RHS Wisley recently.

Everybody Loves Butterflies is written by Tanis Taylor and illustrated by Masumi Furukawa. It’s a fabulous book and available from Amazon (RRP £5.99).

A little bit of magic

The berries that hang over our flapping fence make a happy sanctuary for birds. They love to sit on top of the bush and treat themselves after rummaging for worms!

PODcast IMG_4829

Incredibly a couple of flowers have already appeared and several bulbs are poking their heads above the soil. Even the pots on our patio are showing signs of life.

PODcast IMG_5577

Buds are appearing on the Bay Tree and Rhododendron bush plus the fuzzy heads on the Magnolia tree are starting to burst.

PODcast IMG_5559

A tree covered in algae proved too much of a temptation not to photograph.

PODcast IMG_5550

And this dew covered cobweb was spotted nestling in a pile of logs.

PODcast IMG_5536

How wonderful to see a little bit of magic in the garden already. Linking up with How Does Your Garden Grow? at Mammasaurus.

Immink organic childrenswear

As an adventurous family there’s always a need for good quality clothing that lasts. POD is involved in a range of crafting and painting activities at nursery with bouts of outdoor play. The weekend however sees us exploring the outdoors – we’re often off discovering what Surrey has to offer. There’s nothing better than breathing in that fresh country air and blowing away those cobwebs.

Immink is an organic childrenswear brand. Their clothes are made in Norfolk and they’re designed with active children like POD in mind. Their clothing is perfect for her outdoor adventures as it’s comfortable, practical and great quality. Immink clothing is made from 100% jersey cotton too so the fabric doesn’t irritate her sensitive skin.

PODcast IMG_0208

POD absolutely loves the long sleeved t-shirt and skirt she received from Immink. They work well together but if we’re going somewhere especially messy can wear the long-sleeved t-shirt with jeans or jeggings.

She loves that it has a yellow duck print on the front and often requests to wear it! Despite numerous washes it still looks great and its retained its softness. As has the skirt. Both have aged beautifully.

POD enjoys wearing Immink for breakfast, in this instance accompanied by a frilly skirt,

PODcast IMG_3665

and while she’s re-organising Cinderella’s bed. Although sometimes she’ll just relax in it and watch Tangled on DVD.

PODcast IMG_3693

Most importantly this 100% organic cotton jersey is perfect for layering when we’re out in the countryside. Here’s POD looking very thoughtful wearing her duck tee before we set off on our forest adventure.

PODcast IMG_4130 edit

Immink have such fabulous clothes that really are designed to last. To view the full baby and childrenswear ranges, please visit the Immink website. Alternatively, you can see them at Bubble London on 26th and 27th January 2014.

The new one

First came the red one. A beautiful coat purchased for POD when she was a year old. She was out of it so fast we bought a bigger size of the beige one.

You couldn’t see her hands initially but she grew into it quickly. Here she is skimming stones with Daddy.

IMG_9392

The beige one survived many a muddy puddle.

IMG_2569

And it was loved by everyone right to the very end.

PODcast IMG_1817

The new one is from the same retailer as the red and beige ones. It’s wonderful. Soft to the touch and comfortable. POD is disguising her joy in this photograph.

PODcast IMG_4130

But she adores the purple one.

IMG_4589

It’s only a matter of time before she’s jumping in those muddy puddles!

The monster with no name

After last week’s four-eyed monster, POD is back creating an even scarier creature. The monster kits she received for her birthday have been a huge hit and our 3 year old loves designing her own variations.

PODcast IMG_4355 B&W

It’s wonderful to see the concentration on her face as she decides what goes where and carefully places it in position.

Here he is in all his glory. The monster with no name.

Team Honk does Sport Relief

In February 2013, Tanya from Mummy Barrow, Annie from Mammasaurus and Penny from A Residence visited Ghana with Comic Relief. Whilst there they sent home hundreds of digital postcards which were images of the four Comic relief projects they visited.

Team Honk even recruited celeb blogger Katy Hill along with the support of Jonathon Ross and Davina McCall. That was just the beginning of what became a social media phenomenon. You can read the full story here.

Team Honk Blogger Relay – Lands End to John O’Groats

Team Honk’s master plan this year begins on Sunday 12th January 2014. A relay from Land’s End to John O’Groats involving 200 bloggers who are collectively looking to raise £20,000. The Team Honk blogger relay kicks off in Cornwall and will finish on the 23rd March in John O’Groats. That’s a whopping 3,000 miles over a period of 6 weeks – you can check out the route here.

We’ll be walking, jogging, roller skating, swimming, pushing buggies, jumping on trains, flying…you name it we’re probably doing it!

The Fleet leg

My leg of the blogger relay begins in Hampshire. On Thursday 6th February, Tanya from Mummy Barrow, Laura from Lady Briggs and myself (Charly from PODcast grappling with a box of frogs) are among a group travelling from Fleet to Wokingham.

To make it more difficult for ourselves we’ve doubled the normal route from ten miles to twenty. We’ll take three buses to get to Crowthorne and from there we’ll walk three miles to Luckley House, Wokingham. All in fancy dress of course!

Waiting for us there will be Suzanne from 3 Children and It who will cycle with Belinda Albasini (not a blogger) and Filipa Kay from Gourmet Mum TV. They will take the baton nine miles to Reading where it will be handed to Alice from My Life My Son My Way and her gang.

Sponsor Team Honk

With a Team Honk target of £20,000 and a group target of £500 we need all the help we can get! Please support our fundraising efforts by sponsoring us to do something funny for money. You can sponsor our Team Honk group here.

Social media supporters

With the #TeamHonkRelay starting tomorrow, we’re calling for Team Honk social media supporters – or social honkers! We want to gather social media supporters who can get the message across about who is doing what for each day of the relay. If you’d like to get involved, sign up for emails here. You can also follow Team Honk on TwitterFacebook and Pinterest.

Retro sweets from The Gobstopper

Standing there you could barely see the wood paneled walls for the coloured jars. There was something special about this retro sweet shop, perhaps that’s why you felt like Alice in Wonderland. You didn’t move but your eyes darted all over the place while you decided what went in your white paper bag.

Fizzy Cola Bottles were a firm favourite but what could go with them? Rhubarb & Custard and Kola Cubes? What about Flumps, Love Hearts and Flying Sauces? Or Strawberry Laces, Fried Eggs and Fruit Salad? So many decisions.

Once you had that white paper bag in your grasp, there was no stopping you. That first Fizzy Cola Bottle twinkled on your tongue before the fresh air hit your face.

PODcast IMG_2636

Decades later retro sweets have retained their appeal, not least for their ability to bring back the fondest of memories. The Gobstopper have recreated this feeling of nostalgia with a wonderful shop that sells everyone’s favourites.

Fizzy Cola Bottles was again my first choice. The decision after that was tough as The Gobstoppers’ range is huge! In the end Kola Cubes and Fizzy Peaches were selected.

The retro sweets arrived in great time and were perfectly packaged. A large smile spread across my face when I opened the Kilner glass jar. You couldn’t help but shut your eyes, take a deep breath and remember that wood paneled sweet shop. They tasted as you expected them to – utterly divine!

PODcast IMG_2739

Ordering retro sweets from The Gobstopper couldn’t be simpler. You just select your preferred Kilner glass jar size and the sweets you’d like in it. There are a wide range of gift options available too including jar and box sets. Not to mention retro sweet selections for parties!

There are a hundred variations to choose from so whether your taste is fizzy and sour, soft and chewy or boiled, you’ll find those childhood favourites you grew up with. Whether for you, a family member of a friend it’s a great trip down memory lane.

The four-eyed monster

Exploring her creativity is a role POD takes very seriously – she loves drawing, sticking and painting. This week she coloured between the lines for the first time.

PODcast IMG_3782

The people she draws freehand now have a face, arms and legs. Pictures of Daddy are often a cross between Tin-Tin and a potato. Mummy is a smaller version of Daddy but with hair just on one side of the head. POD’s interpretation of herself is usually egg-shaped. Everyone must have socks so their feet don’t get cold.

POD celebrated her third birthday on Christmas Day. She received an array of new paint and craft kits which have been tested out over the festive period.

PODcast - POD painting

POD also got the opportunity to make a monster. Aptly named “monster” he has four eyes as two just weren’t enough!

A slow toy birthday and Christmas

PODcast IMG_2840 v2Following our recent visit to see Father Christmas in a crystal grotto, POD did begin to believe he might do more than just fish. She wasn’t convinced though.

With her turning three on Christmas Day, it was a perfect time to step up the magic.

So on Christmas Eve a biscuit and a glass of Baileys were left out for Father Christmas along with carrots for his reindeer.

PODcast IMG_2916The following day POD was delighted to see he’d left some presents for her. These included a colouring book and pen set, a finger painting set, Mr Grass Head, a couple of DVD’s and a blue balloon. She‘d asked for a scooter and a blue balloon when she visited Father Christmas in the crystal grotto.

The look on her face when the balloon was blown up was priceless. She didn’t let it out of her sight after that and even held onto it throughout our subsequent car journey.

Christmas presents came once we’d arrived. Daddy looked even more excited than POD when he set eyes PODcast IMG_2979on her Bubble Guppies bath toy – he’s yet to see purple streaks in her hair turn pink in water though!

POD also received a TOMY Megasketcher, several books including The Rhyming Rabbit, Paper Dolls and The Snow Queen as well as CD’s for the car and great crafting sets.

On a recent short break to Bruges we purchased a wooden picnic table – already being fully utilised for meals and colouring. We also bought her a small wooden kitchen from Pintoy while we were there. Adopting a few of the little people from a red wooden bus of hers, she’s taken imaginative play to a whole PODcast IMG_3032new level!

POD received some fantastic new games too including Peppa Pig Snakes & Ladders and Charades for Kids.

The Haba Sleepy Princess game from The Toadstool, is a great adaptation of the classic Princess and the Pea. The idea being to build a bed for the Princess without it toppling over. It’s a great idea for a game and POD’s already had it out several times so hopefully we can play it together soon.

PODcast IMG_3043The Shopping List game from Orchard Toys saw her win her first game – albeit with a little help. She also received Farm Snap although she’s not sharing her cards yet!

She loves her Doctors Suitcase from The Toadstool. POD already enjoys pretending to be a doctor so this set provides the perfect accompaniment.

Once she’d taken out the contents, she set about making her friends better. Peppa, George, a dinosaur, Mummy and Daddy were the first to be treated.

PODcast IMG_3067 colour editAll this activity was a lot to take in so POD was tired by lunchtime. Not that it deterred her from eating a sizable Christmas lunch!

In the afternoon we all sang Happy Birthday while she blew out the candles on her cake.

Among her presents was Baby Annabell, complete with beautifully hand-made clothes, a smart new coat from Monsoon, tickets to see The Gruffalo live, films, her first Cath Kidston bag, clothes, a wooden hobby horse and the scooter she’d asked Father Christmas for!

We’re linking this post up with The Toadstool’s Slow Toys Linky which is open until 31st January 2014.

Christmas Day birthdays

POD shares her Christmas Day birthday with an array of interesting characters.

Most notable is English physicist and mathematician Sir Isaac Newton. Born in 1642, he remains one of the most influential scientists of all time for formulating the three basic laws of motion and the law of universal gravitation.

Humphrey Bogart, said to be one of the greatest actors and coolest men to ever live, arrived on 25th December too. As did Sissy Spacek who is most famous for the original Carrie film. Playing the role of a troubled student, she used telekinetic powers to get revenge on her high school bullies.

In sport, Captain of the English Test and ODI cricket teams, Alistair Cook, has a Christmas Day birthday. Along with fellow cricketers Marcus Trescothick and Simon Jones.

Christmas Day birthdays in entertainment include Helena Christensen – the Danish fashion model, beauty queen and photographer who also appeared in Chris Isaak’s 1991 music video Wicked Game. It was voted one of MTV’s sexiest of all time.

Kenny Everett, the British comedian, radio DJ and television entertainer, was best known for his career as a radio DJ and for The Kenny Everett Video Show.

Annie Lennox was born on 25th December in 1954. She epitomised the Eighties with band The Eurythmics, with hits like Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), before later achieving solo success. She is the most recognised female artist at the Brit Awards and has also been named the Brits Champion of Champions.

Singer-songwriter Dido achieved International success with her first album which sold over 21 million copies Worldwide and won several awards. Her first two albums are among the-best selling albums in UK chart history – White Flag has had 27 million hits on YouTube.

Alannah Myles, the Canadian singer-songwriter, is most known for the popularity of her single Black Velvet. A song which outshone her entire repertoire of sixty recordings including top ten hits from several countries.

The final musician born on Christmas Day is the singer and songwriter of The Pogues. Shane MacGowan has a colourful past and was even thrown out of his band for bad behaviour. His best-known song, Fairytale of New York, which he co-wrote in 1987 remains a top Christmas anthem. The song is the 13th most charted of all time.

POD was born at 10.46am on Christmas Day 2010 to the sound of carols being sung outside the delivery suite. It was the coldest December for one hundred years and there was snow on the ground when we left the hospital.

It’s hard to believe our little baby in the photograph above turns three today – Happy birthday POD!
