The Great Cockcrow Miniature Railway

It’s not every day you get to ride on one of Britain’s most spectacular miniature railways but yesterday we did just that. Thanks to family who surprised us with a voucher for part of our tenth wedding anniversary last month.

We’d not heard of the Great Cockcroft Railway before but it’s located less than 15 miles from us in Lyne near Chertsey. Open every Sunday from May until the end of October we just made it before the season ended.

PODcast IMG_1505

It’s one of the only miniature railways in the country that represents a true mainline. Constructed 46 years ago, it has 30 steam engines and a system that runs on two routes in rural surroundings. The engines are beautiful and in great condition. POD enjoyed watching them pass by while we waited to board.

PODcast IMG_1508

Understandably once we were on the train, it was all SO exciting. Not the greatest of photographs but just look at the delight on POD’s face!

PODcast IMG_1529

We took the red route first which runs along the original route of the railway. The trains run from Hardwick Station through Everglades

PODcast IMG_1576

and over a viaduct to Cockcrow Hill Station. There we saw the engine uncoupled before being turned on the turntable. On the way back we passed through Greywood Tunnel which was dark but lots of fun! There was so much to see on the way round – from the scenery to the stations to these beautiful old signs. There were also people on the passing trains to wave at.

PODcast IMG_1553 B&W

The green route took us from main station Hardwick onto Cockcrow Hill

PODcast IMG_1623

at which point we traveled around the Millennium Loop where we spotted sheep and cows. POD also felt the need to outstretch her arms like Kate Winslet did in the film Titantic.

PODcast IMG_1566

The train then headed back to Hardwick via Greywood Tunnel and the Everglades Junction.

PODcast IMG_1577

There was so much for POD to look at from what was going on around her to the trees above.

PODcast IMG_1590 B&W

There was much laughing, smiling and of course concentrating!

PODcast IMG_1592

Even POD’s invisible friend Lucifer popped along for a little while! Here she is holding him before he darted off to explore.

PODcast IMG_1631

Back at Hardwick station, we got the opportunity to sit in the driver seat. POD looks like she’s surrounded by giants in this photograph but the trains really are miniature.

PODcast IMG_1656

The dedication from the staff really has to be admired. The Great Cockcrow Railway is maintained and operated by a team of volunteers – all of whom are enthusiasts. From the ticket office through to the drivers and the mechanics, everyone was just wonderful.

PODcast IMG_1658

The fun didn’t stop there either. Heading towards the cafe, POD decided to become a soldier. Apparently this is how they stand – I’m guessing minus the pout! Having devoured a hot drink and piece of cake we headed back home after what was a really fabulous experience.

Photographs from Painshill Park

Last weekend we headed over to Painshill Park for the Elmbridge Food Festival. Local food and drink produce was on offer including artisan bakers and wine producers. We were sold when we “Bratwurst” so Bratwurst it was, washed down with a tasty juice. Having taken in the atmosphere, the music and the sunshine, we headed towards the Serpentine Lake for a wander.

Spanning some 150 acres, there are numerous follies to discover at Painshill Park including an incredible crystal grotto. POD adored seeing Santa there last Christmas, it was such a magical experience for her.

PODcast IMG_0006

Passing the vines, which are always so rich in colour at this time of year, we got to enjoy wildlife around the lake. Several dragonflies could be seen darting round at great speed and I even spotted a frog. Bull rushes lined the pathway and sun glimmered on the water – it was simply glorious.

PODcast IMG_0015

POD loved exploring and took it upon herself to climb everything in sight. From part of a wall (check out that cheeky smile!)

PODcast IMG_0036

to a giant hollow tree!

PODcast IMG_0050 this one

There was also lots of fun to be had by the Serpentine Lake. POD watched the swans,

PODcast IMG_0064

ran around (she’s kind of strutting here but you get the idea!)

PODcast IMG_0058

and asking the ducks if they wanted to go in the water. They all obliged!

PODcast IMG_0068

The views at Painshill Park are simply fabulous. Although we had a shorter walk than usually do we got to take in some follies,

PODcast IMG_0103

watch a mongoose looking for food

PODcast IMG_0122

and collect yellow leaves.

PODcast IMG_0128

Although the crystal grotto was closed for the event, it is still the most incredible folly, even from the outside. We’re itching to go back inside again, it’s amazing.

PODcast IMG_0144

It wouldn’t be a family walk without a bit of silliness so we squeezed in a bit of that before grabbing a well deserved ice-cream for the journey home. There’s really is nothing better than blowing away those cobwebs especially on a surprisingly hot Autumn day.

The first signs of Autumn

We love Winkworth Arboretum. Although renowned for its incredible colour displays in Spring and Autumn, it’s a wonderful place to visit any time of year. The National Trust have done a fantastic job maintaining its natural beauty. We spent quite a long time when we arrived climbing trees. Although we ticked this off our #50things list a long time ago, POD has always loved climbing. I’m sure she enjoyed waving and shouting “hello” at passers-by though just as much!

PODcast IMG_9301

After a short banana break, the stepping stones were next on POD’s list. She quickly discovered getting Mummy to hold her hand meant she could hover in the air which was so much more fun! She said the mushrooms we saw might eat her wellies but I’m sure she was just playing me.

PODcast IMG_9320

Having checked out the fallen chestnuts and found a suitable wand (stick), we headed off to explore the nearby trails. This involved more climbing and jumping plus a little running off.

PODcast IMG_9349

And many a muddy puddle to jump into!

PODcast IMG_9379

Having refueled, we set off towards the boathouse and the lake. POD raced down the steps at speed stopping only to throw leaves – mostly at Mummy. It was a great game she found highly entertaining.

PODcast IMG_9394

Just by the boathouse we came across a man who was seemingly calling the ducks. Convinced it wouldn’t work we watched on with interest only to witness ducks leaving the lake and making their way towards him on the path.

I was relieved to see he had bread as we had very little to offer other than the end of a roll (and some brownie although that was for me). POD took it upon herself to help the duck man, under his guidance of course, only to continually request more bread.

PODcast IMG_9412

She wasn’t best pleased when we had to leave them (mainly as all bread supplies had been exhausted!) but we found two ‘busy’ dragonflies to keep us occupied.

PODcast IMG_9426

With the sun making an appearance it was too nice not to just enjoy the lake for a time. The ducks made their way back onto it and you could almost sense they were basking in the sunshine now they were fully fed. We found a lonesome conker just before we left which POD decided to keep safe in her pocket so ‘no-one would steal it’.

Sun

All the excitement meant POD was a little weary walking back up towards the car. With Daddy full of cold at home, Mummy didn’t make for a good piggy back replacement. With both of us back walking, we took it slowly taking in the views at the lookout tower and spotting those early signs of Autumn on the way. No doubt we’ll be back again in the coming weeks to see Winkworth ablaze with red, orange and yellow.

The wonder of ZSL Whipsnade Zoo

I have fond memories of Whipsnade Zoo having visited as a child when we lived in nearby Hertfordshire. Funnily enough the chalk lion that was carved into the hillside below the zoo in 1933 was always something we looked out for when we passed.

Fast forward many years living in London, a move to Surrey and becoming parents, a return trip feels like its been a long time coming. POD loves animals and we’re lucky we have a farm local to us we visit regularly. I’ve been itching to revisit Whipsnade for some time and a zoo was certainly on three-year-old POD’s wishlist – along with a unicorn!

What stuck me when we arrived was the expanse of space, not just for the animals but children too. We love being up close and personal to nature so it was wonderful to see Mara wandering freely. POD was enthralled by this large relation to the guinea pig that comes from South America.

PODcast IMG_7407

As we walked towards the Base Camp hub, which connects the Asia, Africa and Europe zones, POD and Daddy got to explore the nearby hills. This provided them with the perfect opportunity to see what was going on around them – and of course run about!

PODcast IMG_6956

Base Camp

At Base Camp we paid the Hullubazoo Children’s Farm a visit while Daddy grabbed the coffee. Miniature donkeys, pygmy goats, pigs, sheep and ferrets are just some of the animals there with red pandas, ring-tailed lemurs, chimpanzees and otters nearby.

PODcast IMG_6973

The Jumbo Express is a steam engine journey that will take you through territories to see animals such as elephants, rhinos, yaks and camels.

PODcast IMG_7041

There’s also a Discovery Centre that has insects, lizards and frogs, a live Birds of the World demonstration with eagles, hawkes and macaws and sealions in the Splash Zone. We absolutely loved the sealion show especially when they gave us a show of their ears!

PODcast IMG_7060

Afterwards we had a quick refuel before heading to the Asia zone. POD took it upon herself to practice rolling down a hill

PODcast IMG_7103

gathering some speed at times!

PODcast IMG_7105

Asia

Passage through Asia is a large paddock with no barriers between you and the animals. Although Whipsnade Zoo is not a safari park, this area does have a safari feel as it’s accessible by car and also on the Jumbo Express route. There are camels, yak and deer to be seen with shelters if it rains which it did!

PODcast IMG_7155

One of the animals I was really keen to photograph was a tiger. Although I captured one while it was sleeping without the bars in view, it proved impossible with this wonderful creature as I wasn’t close enough. Probably a good thing looking at those sharp teeth!

PODcast IMG_7115

It’s always a treat watching flamingoes and we were lucky to see some babies too. This flamingo spent a little while just cleaning its beak, creating lovely ripples in the water.

PODcast IMG_7198 edit

POD’s excitement levels were at fever pitch as she’d not seen many of these animals in the flesh before. Although it was pouring with rain when we reached the Asian Rhino, it meant we did get to see him enjoying a fabulous bath.

PODcast IMG_7146

It was great to see the elephants and we were lucky enough to spot a baby one too – presumably baby Max! Also in the Asia zone were sloth bears, przewalski’s horse (previously extinct in the wild), onager and blackbucks.

PODcast IMG_7013 edit

Africa

In the African zone, we got to get up really close to the most beautiful giraffes. This one just stopped to say hello and show me these incredible eyelashes. Giraffes are such graceful creatures, it must be amazing to feed them by hand.

PODcast IMG_7375

We also got to enjoy seeing two cheetahs having a moment together, thankfully this time I was almost able to bypass the bars.

PODcast IMG_7223

The zebras were spectacular and appeared to trot over when we stood by the perimeter fence – mother and child both mirroring each other.

PODcast IMG_7208

Having had changeable weather the day we visited, we missed the white rhino and hippo. We certainly weren’t going to miss the lions. When were arrived there was a male right up against the glass with the lionesses sitting behind him. It was impossible to get close so I moved and waited until he walked away from the group.

Somehow I had a feeling if I kept my camera in position he’d turn and look back. It was a superb moment when he did, seemingly just at me too.

PODcast IMG_7250 with body

Not to be outdone, this is POD doing probably the best roar ever. Ever passers-by stopped to watch her impressive display!

PODcast IMG_7285

Meerkats are always quite entertaining and the ones at Whipsnade were no different. You had this chap looking out and another one poking his head through a crevice like he was invisible. POD thought they were just brilliant.

PODcast IMG_7266

Europe

In the Europe zone there are wolverine, brown bears, penguins and wolves. The latter were in the midst of eating so it was an interesting experience seeing each protect the food it had been given.

PODcast IMG_7390

There are also Lookout Lodges at Whipsnade Zoo where you can stay overnight, what an amazing experience that would be! I bet it just comes alive at night time.

PODcast IMG_7294

We headed over to one of the lookout points to have a look at the views. Having enjoyed a spell of jumping in muddy puddles, POD got to enjoy a run around the hillside. That and seeing elephants walk down the road was the perfect end to the most fantastic day. We absolutely loved Whipsnade Zoo, it really is an awesome experience.

PODcast IMG_7319

There is lots on at Whipsnade, whether it be watching what lemurs have for breakfast, feeding bears brunch or seeing hungry penguins. There are also special talks on Gaur and why they enjoy their afternoon snack, how Scimitar-horned Oryx can go so long without having a drink and how Whipsnade brough Przewalkski’s Horse back from extinction.

The magic of Peppa Pig World

Last month we visited Peppa Pig World for the first time. We told POD we were going the night before which in hindsight wasn’t the wisest move given how excited she was. She was beside herself when we arrived announcing she loved it when we’d barely left the car park!

First stop was Madam Gazelle’s School House where we had an official photograph taken with Peppa, George, Suzy Sheep and of course Madam Gazelle herself. It’s a brilliant photograph that just epitomised the day.

PODcast IMG_5561 - Madame Gazelle's Schoolhouse

POD loved being in Peppa’s home too and would have joined her ‘friends’ for dinner if she could. She stood watching them for a time and had to be dragged away!

PODcast IMG_5830 - Peppa Pig's House

POD embraced the characters at Peppa Pig World – Zoe Zebra got a lot of attention

PODcast IMG_5678 edit

as did Suzy Sheep. She’d run to both like they were a long lost friends!

PODcast IMG_5653 - Suzy Sheep edit

POD brought ‘little Peppa’ with her and waited patiently to see Peppa and George so she could show her to them.

PODcast IMG_5635 - waiting to see Peppa

Thankfully we got to see not just Peppa but George too.

PODcast IMG_5636 - Peppa

There are numerous rides at Peppa Pig World and we really were spoilt for choice. From Miss Rabbit’s Helicopter ride,

PODcast IMG_5886 Miss Rabbit Helicopter ride final

to Daddy Pig’s Car Ride

PODcast IMG_5750 - Daddy Pig's car ride

(where POD got to drive!),

PODcast IMG_5934

the Windy Castle ride

PODcast IMG_5580 - Windy Castle Ride final

and George’s Dinosaur Adventure. There was also Peppa Pig’s Balloon ride and Grandpa Pig’s train too.

PODcast IMG_5723

Once we’d investigated Pedro Pony’s photo booth where POD got to have her photo taken in Daddy Pig’s car, we explored some of Paulton’s Park. There’s a wonderful double decker carousel that POD absolutely loved.

PODcast IMG_6023

She even gave the horse she rode a kiss before she left!

PODcast IMG_6028

Nearby there’s an impressive collection of topiary including a horse and carriage, a chimney sweep and a leaping lion with its tamer. The numerous gardens at Paulton’s Park are wonderful too. The snakes and ladders garden is simply fabulous

PODcast IMG_6353

with the African Garden including many surprises – like these two topiary elephants.

We had the most amazing day and POD was unsurprisingly asleep before we’d even left the car park. She’s asked if we can go again about 412 times.

First bike ride

POD loved chatting to the mannequins in our local cycle shop recently but she displayed great pedaling skills too. Although steering and facing forward were notably absent, she’s the proud owner of her first bicycle. We opted for one with stabilisers rather than a balance bike which she’d no doubt grow out of before we could blink.

PODcast IMG_8407 this one

This weekend we headed over to Alice Holt Forest so POD could try her bike out properly. Managed by the Forestry Commission, it’s always a wonderful place to visit and the smell of the pine trees is divine – we regularly visit. Although POD decided not to pedal at all at first, she enjoyed the view from her bike especially when she looked up at the trees.

PODcast IMG_8409

Seeing a wooden fort was quite distracting and she stopped pedaling almost as soon as she’d begun. On discovering a group of boys were chasing each other around it, she sat patiently on a tree trunk waiting her turn.

Once she’d climbed to the top a couple of times, the helmet was put back in place and she was on the move again. Albeit very slowly. She does well with pedaling if the pedals are in the right position and she’s learnt how to ring the bell!

PODcast IMG_8449

Facing forwards is not second nature just yet. POD was more interested in peering at her feet, observing what was around her or looking behind her. Staying on the path was a little tricky at times as she’s not got to grips with how to steer. We headed towards the bracken on several occasions but kept her on the path. It was only a matter of time before she left the path completely although she found it highly entertaining!

PODcast IMG_8444

With Daddy behind her and me running backwards in front of her (while taking photographs!), she managed a few minutes of constant pedaling gathering speed in the process. It was at that point, POD discovered cycling is really good fun. The look on her face at that moment was just priceless. Pure joy!

The National Trust | Nature misses you

There’s something magical about being outdoors. The sense of escapism it brings and seeing a world of discovery through a child’s eyes. As a family of three we love to spend our spare time blowing away those cobwebs.

Over these past months we’ve visited (and re-visited!) Hatchlands Park, Polesden Lacey, Clandon Park, Frensham Little Pond, Claremont Landscape Garden, Headley Heath, Bookham Common, the Devil’s Punch Bowl, Hinton Ampner, Witley and Milford Commons, Box Hill, Winkworth Arboretum and Abinger Roughs.

We still have lots more exploring to do too, not just in the vicinity of the Surrey Hills but across nearby counties.

Nature misses you sign - Wasdale

The National Trust’s 50 Things to do before you’re 11 and 3/4 is a great way to make the most of your time outside. Now POD has reached three and a half, we’re cracking through this list and having lots of fun doing it. If you’re looking for a inspiration, here’s a round-up of POD’s first challenges.

1. Climb a tree

POD has climbed ever since she could walk. Adopting a no fear attitude, she’s become an expert at climbing trees – the higher the better!

PODcast IMG_2587 edit

She’s not so keen on coming down. Daddy ended up climbing trees himself on a recent visit to Headley Heath!

PODcast IMG_6188

2. Roll down a really big hill

This was POD’s first attempt at rolling down a really big hill – picking the grass amphitheatre at Claremont Landscape Garden. It was memorable for that and the goose poo she collected in her hair on the way down!

PODcast IMG_7526

There’s still a bit of a sideways shuffle initially but she’s getting the hang of it now. Finishing at the bottom as you’d expect – in a fit of the giggles.

PODcast IMG_7105

5. Skim a stone

We’ve not spent much time at the beach yet although the Hampshire coast is there for the taking. Grandad lives in Devon which is the perfect place to watch Daddy skim stones. He’s always been rather good at it.

PODcast IMG_8150

However POD is an independent three and a half year old who likes to do things her way. You might be able to tell by the interesting outfit she chose. Gone are the perfect stones for skimming, replaced with boulders which are apparently better. She has a great bowling career ahead of her.

PODcast IMG_8154

6. Run round in the rain

There’s been a fair amount of running round in the rain recently. This photograph was taken just after POD had been running in what can only be described as monsoon like conditions! The brolly provided a reprieve before she continued in her quest.

PODcast IMG_7977

13. Make a mud pie

This is POD’s first mud pie which was carefully made with mud and water. A little too much water as it happens.

PODcast IMG_7755

Having slopped half of it across the grass (and herself), POD was busy creating mud pie number two. This is her concentration face.

PODcast IMG_7787

18. Create some wild art

POD loves to get creative outdoors – it usually means she’ll end up with green legs. Here she is with a clover she painted blue – other flowers and plants got the same treatment. Some while still attached to bushes.

PODcast IMG_0623

Her wild art sheet featured a sunny scene with animals and a selection of patterns crafted by painting leaves.

PODcast IMG_0641

19. Play Pooh Sticks

We like to play Pooh Sticks whenever we see a bridge with a free flowing stream or river. She loved this one at Bookhams Common as she was able to get so close to it. A little too close at times!

PODcast IMG_5072

21. Pick blackberries growing in the wild

We’re lucky we have a huge blackberry bush growing in the garden. POD loves that we can pick blackberries which she can have with yoghurt once they’ve been washed.

PODcast IMG_4305

This is POD being especially helpful while Mummy reached for the higher blackberries. We ended up collecting enough blackberries to make a delicious blackberry, apple and raspberry crumble. POD also collected a few dandelions (we abandoned outside) and a bowl of rather tart damsons.

PODcast IMG_7670

22. Explore inside a tree

We’ve come across many ancient trees while exploring woodland managed by The National Trust. Although we found what looked like a rabbit in a tree at the Devil’s Punch Bowl (it wasn’t), the knobby trees at Claremont are perfect for nosing in.

PODcast IMG_1548

23. Visit a farm

Bocketts Farm Park is nearest to us and we love visiting as it’s one of the few working farms. When we were last there POD fed the animals for the first time. We knew once she tried there would be no stopping her and we were right. Just look at that face, she looks as happy as she did when she visited Peppa Pig World.

PODcast IMG_2880

24. Go on a walk barefoot

There is nothing better than feeling the sand in-between your toes, it makes me smile even to this day. POD experienced it for the first time at Frensham Little Pond in Surrey. This month she was able to walk barefoot on a Suffolk beach and venture into the sea for the very first time.

PODcast IMG_4663

28. Climb a huge hill

There are many hills in Surrey, some of which feel huge to POD’s little legs. She’s looking quite weary in this photograph at Headley Heath. She had already run down the hill and walked back up it twice though.

PODcast IMG_6243

Perhaps that’s why she wanted to sit down. After a short break, she was off again climbing trees and stirring puddles with sticks.
PODcast IMG_6249

30. Hold a scary beast

POD was so nervous about holding this newborn lamb, she’d only held a chick up to this point. She was so worried about dropping him but she did brilliantly. POD loves stroking animals with a rabbit, a chicken and a goat among the favoured recently. The same can’t be said for the mouse one of the handlers put in her hand…now that was a scary beast! Thankfully it survived being launched into the air.

PODcast IMG_3295

31. Hunt for bugs

We have a great garden for bug hunting and we’re often looking for bees

PODcast IMG_5826

or ladybirds. We also love counting the pretty humbug like snails that grace our red hot poker stems after the rain.

PODcast Tues

33. Catch a falling leaf

POD was just the right age to experience the wonder of Autumn last year. We had the best time throwing and catching leaves in the Ha-Ha at Claremont while admiring the daffodils. POD grabbed many a falling leaf but she’s yet to catch one directly from a tree – we have high hopes for this year!

PODcast

35. Discover what’s in a pond

We visited the fabulous Frensham Little Pond recently and immediately fell in love with it. We’d not been before and it was the perfect place to explore after a particularly busy week. POD and Daddy went in the Little Pond together to look for fish. They even ventured in for a swim.

PODcast IMG_0116

We also saw this little fella swim past while we were having a sandwich. Not something you see every day in Surrey, amazing!

PODcast IMG_0310

42. Go swimming in the sea

Finally, POD got the opportunity to swim in the sea for the first time this month. We spent a few days in Suffolk and headed over to Felixstowe beach where she went in right up to her chest. She can’t swim by herself yet but it was a great start especially as it was cold!

PODcast IMG_4498

It was the first time (that she’ll remember) being by the sea and she loved it. She was mesmerised by those waves.

PODcast IMG_4624

We love 50 Things from the National Trust. Not only have they been really cool and great fun, they’ve resulted in great memories and some firsts too. The free app is perfect for keeping a record of all the wonderful things we’ve done outdoors.

Exploring High Lodge, Thetford Forest

We recently escaped to POD’s Grandparents, affectionately known as Baba and Gagam, for a few days. Having had the best time at Felixstowe beach paddling, looking for shells and making sandcastles, the following day was spent in the forest.

PODcast IMG_5004

Like the Alice Holt forest we regularly visit, High Lodge in Thetford Forest is managed by the Forestry Commission.

PODcast IMG_4796

POD headed off to explore the play area almost as soon as we arrived.

PODcast IMG_4804

It wasn’t long before she was running around in an excitable fashion scaling everything in sight.

PODcast IMG_4811

Even testing out the more challenging climbs that were perhaps a little too big for her!

PODcast IMG_4825

We were lucky to stumble across The Gruffalo. POD did the trail at Alice Holt a few weeks back so she was happy to do a great impression of “oh help, oh no it’s a Gruffalo”. This mainly involved running round in circles waving her arms in the air. The Gruffalo did get a cuddle though.

PODcast IMG_4842

After this initial bout of excitement, we headed to the car to collect picnic supplies. The little rain that had appeared soon dispersed and we were able to enjoy the most fabulous feast in the woods, the smell of pine all around.

PODcast IMG_4865

After sitting on a small chair away from the rest of us, POD decided to collect fir cones and attempt to climb a tree. She also tried to take a photograph of everyone with my camera, capturing mostly trees and a little sky.

PODcast IMG_4878

The Sculpture Play Trail includes natural wood posts with mini sculptures and arrows. There is lots to do along the way and much to explore. POD thoroughly enjoyed pretended to be a spider!

PODcast IMG_4908

The previous rainfall had generated many opportunities for jumping in muddy puddles. Although POD had launched herself over a fair few, lost her balance and regained it again, it was inevitable this would happen! Thankfully with the sun out she didn’t take long to dry!

PODcast IMG_4934

The play sculptures reflect real life in the forest – a spider, a woodpecker, forwarder, woodlark and a rabbit. POD loved the woodpecker and came down via the pole on several occasions.

PODcast IMG_4942

She even gave the monkey bars a go albeit briefly!

PODcast IMG_4951

High Lodge is larger than Alice Holt but the forest is just as beautiful. There’s something rather wonderful about being surrounded by trees and bracken lined pathways.

PODcast IMG_4961

POD had already done a great deal of climbing but insisted on scaling up and down this sculpture. She has incredible balance although I’m sure having no fear helps too!

PODcast IMG_4979

She had so much fun here she didn’t want to leave!

PODcast IMG_4994

But she was getting a little weary! After a little help from Daddy, we headed back to where we started. POD was rewarded for all her walking and climbing with a lolly. As were we (seemed only fair)!

Fun in Felixstowe

POD is always saying she wants to build a snowman – you can guess why! Almost as regularly she asks if she can build a sandcastle at the beach. Although we headed to the wonderful Frensham Little Pond recently, Surrey isn’t known for its beaches.

We had last week off work so we spent a few days in Suffolk. POD’s Grandparents, affectionately known as Baba and Gagam, live there. They’re only half an hour away from Felixstowe too – an Edwardian seaside town on the North Sea coast.

There’s something calming about being near the sea and hearing the sound of the waves. It was a glorious day too so the sun just sparkled on the water. A gentle breeze made for a perfect temperature.

Although POD has been on beaches in the past, she wasn’t old enough to remember. This time she wanted to go in the water almost as soon as we arrived.

The waves and the chilly water spooked her a little initially. But those little toes were in the sea for the first time and it didn’t take long for her to gain confidence. She headed out with Daddy and Buba with the water up to a chest at one point.

Back on the beach she was able to dig sand and fill her bucket. She also got to search for shells, checking each to make sure there weren’t housing any ‘friends’.

Her stripey rainbow hat was used as a makeshift bag to collect them.

It was wonderful just sitting there watching her whilst taking in the views and seeing the sun glisten on the sea.

POD even walked down the waters edge on her own and just stood looking at the sea. She looks so tall in her toweling dress.

She got to make sandcastles before she left – a combination of sand and shells.

Then it was time to pick out the shells, fill a bucket with water and add sand. It reminded me of making mud pies with my brother all those years ago.

After the beach, next stop was lunch at the quirky Ferry Cafe in the Felixstowe Ferry village. We sat outdoors so we could enjoy our fish and chips with harbour views but the American style diner offered some fabulous 50’s-inspired nostalgia inside.

We then headed down to the docks to watch people crab fishing and have a look at a few of the boats

before finishing the day off with the largest ice-cream in the World.

We headed over to Hertfordshire to see my mum and one of my brothers the day after POD’s (un)birthday celebrations. It was another glorious day and POD insisted on wearing a party dress, ladybird wings and deeley boppers. Mum’s garden backs onto the 190 acre Cassiobury Park in Watford so we headed there for a picnic.

After a brief ride on Daddy’s shoulders, POD raced down the hill at great speed. Her incentive the bouncy castle and play area at the bottom.

Having had a look around (let herself into the play area) we found a nice spot for a picnic. POD made herself comfortable almost as soon as the blanket was down with Daddy creating additional shade with a shopping trolley. Mum brought a great spread that included sausages, sandwiches, crisps, cheese and treats. Someone couldn’t wait to get stuck in!

POD was given a mini golf set by Grandma so she spent a time playing with Daddy although this mostly involved chasing after him with the clubs. She was then treated to a Twix shortbread which I suspect she rather enjoyed!

Having lined the stomachs, we headed over to the miniature railway for a train ride.  It’s a pretty little route and great fun too – POD was grinning from ear to ear throughout.

Next stop were the paddling pools (POD tested all of them) before getting changed and enjoying an ice-cream. The ladybird wings were back in place before long and the climbing skills were put to good use.

The nature reserve we visited next was so peaceful, hardly a soul around – such a contrast to the play area. Wonderful for us and for POD who got to explore and chat to a few ducks. We saw a dragonfly too but Mummy was too slow to photograph it.

POD spent a while trying to convince her uncle there was something in the hole of this tree. It’s like history repeating itself. I remember being told the wombles lived in our garden by the previous owner of a house we moved into. I was only five at the time and spent years calling for Orinoco…we didn’t even live in Wimbledon!
