Costa Verde, Corsica | Cervione

Located in Corsica’s Costa Verde is Cervione, an enchanting village with stone houses, cobbled alleyways and astonishing views. This little-known part of Corsica is situated just half an hour from second largest city Bastia.

We spent an afternoon in Cervione with our four-year-old daughter POD. We fell in love with it not long after we got out of the taxi! One side of the main street is lined with quirky cafes and the other spectacular panoramic views. It’s no wonder it was nicknamed ‘the balcony by the sea’.

PODcast - Cervione collage 1On arrival we headed towards the bell tower to begin exploring. At the top of the cobbled alleyway was a charming square and Cathedrale de Saint Erasme – a former Roman Catholic Cathedral and a national monument of France. It was the seat of the Bishop of Aleria and is today one of the Corsica’s earliest baroque cathedrals.

Inside is a marbled black and white floor, wooden stalls and an impressive organ. The domed ceiling is most impressive and you almost lost your balance taking in its detail. POD’s not been in a cathedral of this size before and spent the majority of our time in there looking up with her mouth open.

PODcast - Cervione collage 2Outside we noticed swallows had made nests along the front of the cathedral. We presumed this were the case because there were so many swallows in Cervione. To the left of the cathedral was a doorway, almost hidden, into a quaint looking restaurant. If you walked past, you may even miss it completely if you didn’t know it was there. A local cafe beckoned, with the temperature pushing thirty degrees and no sea air, we were in need of some refreshments.

PODcast - Cervione collage 3We missed the Museum of Cervione which is near the cathedral but we had plenty to keep ourselves occupied. Back in the main street we found a double door, with an impressive lion door knocker, slightly ajar. Inside were two stone pillars, a beautiful ceiling and steps leading to what we presumed to be flats. The entrance was not in the best condition but you could see it must have been very grand at some point.
PODcast - Cervione collage 4Below the main street was the prettiest playground I think I’ve ever seen. Boasting the most stunning views, it was almost like a walled garden set in the mountain. Above it were more stone buildings with shutters and the clock tower was once again visible.
PODcast - Cervione collage 5POD loved the playground and took great delight in trying everything. She wasn’t very happy when we had to leave although the blow was softened slightly when we spotted a lizard close-by.

PODcast - Cervione collage 6

Everywhere you look in Cervione is something that makes you go wow. Whether it’s the lonesome house set in the hillside, the chiming of the bell tower or the magnificent views, it’s a special place.

PODcast - Cervione collage 7Thankfully there are cafes aplenty too so when the heat gets a bit too much, you can stop, grab a beer and just take it all in.

Watersports at San Lucianu Beach Resort

Mark Warner makes everything so easy. From checking in, the BA chartered flight and the transfer the other end to the array of activities available on resort and of course the childcare.

Earlier this year, we had our first family holiday with Mark Warner at the Levante Beach Resort in Rhodes, Greece. We’d never put POD in childcare on holiday before but a few hours each morning meant we could finally dust down the rackets. The POD Father even dilly dallied with sailing although it was short-lived – simply because we ran out of time.

Tennis at San Lucianu Beach Resort

Our recent trip to the beautiful island of Corsica staying at the San Lucianu Beach Resort was our fourth holiday with Mark Warner and the fourth time we’ve taken advantage of their tennis set-up.

The POD Father and I signed up for the classic course, which gives 4 x 1 hour mornings of tennis tuition for £80, with in this case a single coach, Blake. Previously we’d played tennis at San Agostino, Lakitira and Levante where there are more courts and three coaches respectively.

Trespass 3-in-1 jacket review

Five years ago we made the decision to leave the big smoke and upped sticks to Surrey. Although in Guildford we’re still within easy reach of London, it’s one of the best decisions we ever made.

The Surrey Hills is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which provides us with endless opportunities to explore with daughter POD. It’s the best feeling seeing the World through a child’s eyes and she absolutely loves the outdoors.

After the rain at Newlands Corner (by Charly Dove) x

As you’d expect with a four-year-old in tow, our adventures are a leisurely affair. And we’re certainly not dictated to by the weather, we just dress appropriately. Walking boots are the staple with wellies and waterproofs the welcome addition if its raining.

I never get it right. I’m the owner of many coats but until recently, none have been fit for purpose. This Trespass 3-in-1 jacket however is just brilliant and already I love it.

PODcast IMG_4687

Made from Tres-tex, the waterproof and breathable fabric, this jacket is superb for outdoor pursuits. It has a 260gsm detachable inner microfleece which keeps me gloriously warm. This can be removed with the outer jacket worn on its own when it’s mild.

PODcast IMG_5460

As well as being waterproof to 200mm and breathable to 300mvp, there are taped seams to shield me from the weather. A clever layering system enables me to control my temperature and draw moisture away from my body.

It also has adjustable cuffs, an adjustable concealed hood and a drawcord on the hem so you adapt the jacket to suit. The front has two zip pockets for keeping essential items safe. Or warming your hands if you forget your gloves!

PODcast - Trespass collage

The versatility of this Trespass jacket means it can be worn all year round whether you’re hiking, out with the kids or walking the dog. Its high performance ranking (TP75) highlights comfort and protection for those of us that demand a little more.

PODcast IMG_5470

For me, it provides a genius layering system that didn’t exist in my wardrobe of many coats. Being warm is hugely important to me but staying dry and regulating my temperature is too. This Trespass jacket offers all of that plus it’s really comfortable and looks great too.

PODcast IMG_5463

Trespass caters for men, women, boys and girls – you can check out the full range, which also includes equipment, on their website. There is up to 60% off in their Summer sale.

PODcast IMG_5499

The jacket featured in this post has an RRP of £149.99 but is currently in the Trespass sale for only £33.99 (77% off).

Exploring the Isle of Wight Zoo

The family-run Isle of Wight Zoo was built within the ruins of a Victorian Fort. Located in Sandown, opposite the beautiful Yaverland Beach, its special interest is tigers and lemurs. Although the focus now is looking after older tigers, once upon a time the zoo walked tiger cubs on the beach.

PODcast IMG_1327 edit

We were at the zoo as part of a trip to the Isle of Wight which saw us explore Sandown, Shanklin and Ryde. We’d traveled over by ferry which meant we had the freedom to move about as we pleased. We hit the Isle of Wight Zoo as soon as it opened as it was high tide first thing in the morning. It did mean we missed seeing Casper wandering around although he did raise his sleepy head for us.

PODcast IMG_1282

Tequila the jaguar was brought in by an animal entertainment troupe had behavioural problems when she arrived at the zoo following a less-than-happy home. She’s seemingly come on leaps and bounds over the past 16 years.

PODcast IMG_1237 B&W

She was mesmerising to watch. Her dappled coat was beautiful and she seemed so well natured. On one hand you could almost imagine giving her a stroke, the old tyres reminding you what dangerous creatures they really are.

PODcast IMG_1240

There are three species of monkey at the Isle of Wight Zoo – spider monkeys and capuchins with vervet monkeys behind the scenes. Full of energy they were bounding around having a whale of a time. POD loved watching them chase each other at great speed then head our way as if they were saying hello! The wallabies were great fun too and we loved the white one especially. There were all named after all the Sesame Street characters.

PODcast IMG_1349 B&W

The Isle of Wight Zoo is home to a large collection of lemurs which originate from Madagascar. There were black and white ruffed lemurs, ring-tailed lemurs, white-fronted brown lemurs, red-ruffed lemurs, mongoose lemurs, black lemurs and grey mouse lemurs. Many reside in Lemurland which is the area of the zoo devoted to them.

PODcast IMG_1258

Meerkats are fascinating creatures, they always strike me as being quite inquisitive. As well as those exploring, we got to see one asleep for a couple of minutes – on it’s back. Who knew they even did that!

PODcast IMG_1293

The Isle of Wight Zoo has specialised in tigers for many years. There are currently seven tigers at the zoo, many of whom have circus backgrounds.

PODcast IMG_1286 edit

Zena is a rare white version of the Indian Tiger, she is just stunning and was more than happy to come over to say hello.

PODcast IMG_1311

It was a wonderful moment when she attempted to get her older sister Zia to come and play with her. Alas she was unsuccessful and Zia was quite happy to lounge about in the sun!

PODcast IMG_1315

POD thoroughly enjoyed seeing the animals and looking for those that were hiding. She even got to discover a dinosaur hidden beneath a sand pit, such a great idea.

PODcast IMG_1338

Of course she had lots of fun in the playground too. Once more climbing as high as she could before launching herself at Daddy!

PODcast IMG_1366

In addition to the zoo itself, the Animal Cafe and Education Centre has a number of small animals and reptiles on view. POD was so excited about these, she even grabbed one of the chefs to show him what she’d seen!

PODcast IMG_1388

We had the best time at the Isle of Wight Zoo, it was the perfect start to our first visit to the island. Next time we’re there we must check out some of the hands-on animal experiences they offer, I rather fancy feeding the big cats!

Jumping at Ryde Beach

Ryde was our final stop on a recent trip to the Isle of Wight. It’s the largest town on the island and home one of the longest piers in the UK. At low tide the sand banks reach almost to the end of the listed structure.

Ryde’s award-winning beach is located just a short drive from the ferry port so it seemed the ideal location for a pit stop. The esplanade stretches from the hovercraft terminal eastwards past the harbour which is where the beaches begin. They stretch down to Appley and the gothic structure of Appley Tower then onto Puckpool.

The views at Ryde when the tide is out are breathtaking. You can see right across the Solent to Portsmouth with the landmark Spinnaker Tower forming the backdrop. There are an array of boats to be seen as well as two of the 19th Century Solent defence forts – Spitbank and Horse Sand.

PODcast IMG_1756 featured

Having already visited the Isle of Wight Zoo, Yaverland Beach and Shanklin, we relaxed with ice-creams and took in what Ryde had to offer. Curiosity got the better of us though and it wasn’t long before we were wandering along the esplanade.

PODcast IMG_1673 (1)

POD opting to walk along the wall so she could get a better view. Not that she needed to, the stretch of sand was quite incredible. People near the sea mere dots in the distance.

PODcast IMG_1678 (1)

The plan was a short walk then back to the car in time for our ferry.

PODcast IMG_1691

PODcast IMG_1700 B&W

But POD had other ideas despite being worn out. With the ice-creams devoured, she embarked on a spot of esplanade jumping. Daddy showing her how best to launch herself into the air.

PODcast IMG_1714 final EDIT

After Daddy finished jumping POD continued to launch herself off the esplanade. Again and again and again and again. Each time adopting a different position before landing in the sand in a fit of giggles. It was the best game ever.

We lost count how many times she jumped and the more we laughed, the more she jumped. She showed no sign of stopping either. Unsurprisingly we had to physically drag her away when it was time to leave. Not before she’d squeezed in another couple of jumps though!

We had so much fun at Ryde Beach. These photographs make me laugh every time I see them. What a perfect end to a truly wonderful trip.

Discover the islands of Antigua and Barbuda

Antigua and Barbuda are the quintessential Caribbean islands that boast some of the most exceptional beaches in the World. Located in the archipelago of the Leeward Islands, these idyllic islands offer all year round sunshine, powdery sand beaches and crystal clear waters.

Admiral Horatio Nelson sailed to Antigua and you’ll notice an English influence with the narrow roads, colourful villages and historic buildings. The island has 365 beaches providing beach paradise to all who visit. Most of the reef-filled waters are situated on the Caribbean side of the island with its coral reefs attracting snorkelers and divers worldwide. Barbuda’s coastline is edged with long pink and white sandy beaches and protected by barrier reefs. The island also offers abandoned forts, caves and ancient shipwrecks.

Childcare at Mark Warner

When we booked our holiday to Greece with Mark Warner, at the Levante Beach Resort, we weren’t sure if we were going to utilise the childcare on offer.  Mainly as we see a family trip being exactly that and because POD is always looked after by the same people.

We were however really keen to get back into tennis again, it had been ages since we’d played regularly. So before leaving the UK, we booked POD into Mini Club (suitable for 3 to 5 year olds) for a few hours each morning. There was no charge for this. We figured we could make an informed choice on what we wanted to do when we arrived on resort. Although we’ve holidayed with Mark Warner twice before as a couple, this was our first experience as a family.
