The stunning Cascade de L’Ucelluline is located on the border between the villages of Santa Maria Poggio and San Nicolao in Corsica. We’d heard about this hidden waterfall through staff at the San Lucianu Beach Resort.
We spent the majority of our time utilising the activities on resort. We’d also visited the magnificent village of Cervione for a couple of hours so I was excited to see what else the local area had to offer. With the age limit for the walk 14+, POD stayed on resort with Daddy that afternoon while I headed to the waterfall with a few fellow bloggers and our Mark Warner Guide.
The San Lucianu Beach Resort is flanked by spectacular mountains which are visible from the front of resort. It was quite something to be beneath them and the farmhouses we passed were just beautiful.
The road we walked along was relatively quiet with the exception of the odd car that sped past. It was hot walking in direct sunlight though especially with the temperature pushing thirty degrees but the scenery more than made up for that.
We had a couple of surprises along the way. Most notably from a tribe of goats with their kids that suddenly appeared in front of us at a bridge. We weren’t sure whether to pass them or not (they do have horns after all!) but they soon moved when we headed towards them. There seemed to be hundreds of them although I’m sure there weren’t really!
The terrain became tougher the nearer we got to the waterfall. Harder underfoot and we were all a little overheated at this point.
Thankfully not long after that we reached a path in the shade which was well needed even if for a short time. We couldn’t hear the waterfall yet but there was a sense of being close as due to the river running to the right of us. It was certainly something comforting to hear the sound of running water.
Our journey after that took us across large boulders and uneven rocks some of which were in water. A few of us were beginning to feel a little light headed at this point so we took a slightly longer route as we neared the waterfall to avoid slipping. This was definitely a good decision.
Although the walk had taken considerably longer than 45 minutes, seeing the Cascade de L’Ucelluline for the first time made it all so worthwhile. We arrived to see a couple of other guests from the hotel in the water laughing and waving their arms in the air while they stood beneath the fall. It really was a perfect spot.
The Cascade de L’Ucelluline consists of two parts, we were at the lower basin but you could see people at the top of the waterfall exploring. To the left of the waterfall was a rope which was mostly climbed by people who wanted to jump into the crystal clear waters below.
The water was icy cold but largely refreshing after the walk to get there. Quite exhilarating in fact. As others had already, we stood beneath the fall, the water bouncing off our backs. We were surprised to see the flow of the waterfall change but apparently this is typical at this time of year.
Our time at the beautiful Cascade de L’Ucelluline seemed short but we’d spent a good hour or so soaking up the atmosphere there. It was a special place. Our journey back to the resort took us the way we’d come.
The walk there and back was tiring in the sunshine but oh my goodness it was so worth it. Jaw dropping scenery and a beautiful waterfall hidden from the villages that surround it. An absolute treat.
