Much as we relish the Surrey countryside only being a short drive away, there’s something to be said for heading to the coast. We love the sandy beach at West Wittering, a firm favourite all year round, and we enjoy making ad hoc trips to other coastal destinations as well. Brighton is not somewhere we get to as regularly as we should although it’s only an hour or so away. Added to which, we have some rather interesting memories!
JD’s uncle lives in the area but probably our most notable trip was when Fat Boy Slim played on the beach. Remember that? We were living in London at the time and it was a gorgeously sunny day so a group of us headed to Brighton to make the most of it. Little did we know many others would do the same and what was supposed to be a concert of c.50,000 people ended up being more like 250,000. It was memorable that’s for sure – even if it did take us two hours to get off the beach. Suffice to say we missed the last train home but were thankfully rescued by the said uncle who put us up for the night!
Of course, life before POD seems a million years ago although we wouldn’t have it any other way. On this particular day, we thought we’d timed it perfectly arriving in Brighton just as the blue sky appeared. It turns out it was pretty short-lived but who doesn’t love time on the beach skimming stones? Just as beautiful albeit with a chill in the air. Brighton Pier is always a great vista and it was nice to warm the cockles at little.
POD always enjoys going to Brighton and while there’s a little less going on in winter, there was more than enough to keep her occupied whether it was pretending to be a rockstar, playing one of the games in the arcade or admiring the horses on the carousel. The latter was closed the day we were there but with the wind picking up, we opted to take a look through one of the telescopes before warming ourselves up indoors.
One of the places we always enjoy going to is the quirky and utterly brilliant Marwood’s. Situated in Ship Street, in the South Lanes area, it’s a bar, coffee shop and sells great cake. What makes it unique is the ground and upstairs floors are filled with Eighties memorabilia. There’s plenty to have a look at (even on the ceiling) and it brings back a whole host of memories. Until next time Brighton!
