A tale of two halves

The Doves are huge advocates of the National Trust and we’re lucky to have so many properties local to us. We venture outside the Surrey Hills whenever time allows and Mottisfont has been on the ‘must see’ list for a while. Located in a sheltered valley near Romsey in Hampshire, the country house is set in the most magnificent grounds with ancient trees, lawns and streams to explore.

An inset day and an unexpected bout of sunshine provided the perfect opportunity to discover Mottisfont (full post to follow). We left the house a little later than intended but POD dozed off almost immediately which was a blessing in disguise. Having refused to sleep until c.10pm for five nights on the trot, she was shattered!

She woke up when we reached the Mottisfont car park fully refreshed and raring to go. We spent half an hour when we arrived just peering at the stream beneath a brick bridge before heading to the huge lawn in front of the house for crazy star jumps! It seemed at that point we were going to have the best mother daughter day ever.

We took a path round to a Stream Garden and font before checking out the pretty Winter Garden where we chatted to staff about birds. POD had been on the hunt for a Robin in-between hopping onto every stepping stone she could find and making silly faces!

There’s a brilliant Family Trail to follow at Mottisfont but having not been there before we knew we had much to see. We did spot Mr Scrooge’s counting house though and POD took it upon herself to do some colouring in the toy manufacturer’s workshop. Having explored some of the grounds, climbed trees and oggled at giant baubles on the Christmas tree, lunch was certainly in order. In the restaurant we chatted, laughed and shared each others’s food. The day had been almost perfect up to that point and lots of fun too.

After lunch, the combination of late nights, fresh air and exercise tipped POD over the edge. What started as a tantrum about wearing gloves quickly developed into shouting, stomping and lying on the ground kicking! Ten minutes later the tranquility of the walled garden was replaced with ‘fournager’ style behaviour and an array of bad tempered facial expressions! It took forever to return to the car where POD immediately took off her wellies only to fall straight into a puddle. Once inside the car, she asked if she could have her music on – you can guess what the response was. A few minutes later, a little voice began singing “hello…it’s me, I was wondering…”. It was at that point we both fell about laughing.

This sounds like a fun place to visit. Your photos are great – especially the ‘surprised’ one. Sorry about the tantrum – these things happen, but they can be stressful!

Your photos are brilliant and absolutely classic!! So funny. We are National Trust fans too (and have had many such incidents!) It sounds like the good times outshone the bad though (although I think that bottom photo is absolutely adorable!)

Oh bless, she still looks gorgeous even in fournager mode. CHildren really do flip on the edge of a coin, yet we will always love them so, so much.

What fabulous stroppy and silly faces POD does! This place sounds and looks wonderful, Hampshire is a bit far for just this sadly, but if I’m passing by en-route elsewhere I might go and relax.
