How does your garden grow?

PODcast IMG_6593After the wonderful airplants and Dhalias from the Wisley Flower Show, this week we’re back at The Doves.

The Sunflowers POD and I planted as seeds earlier this year are beginning to bloom. Hurrah! Although the bees had all but disappeared, they’ve been back with a vengeance dancing around the first fully opened Sunflower. This despite being blown around in what were some really gusty winds.

A lonesome ladybird was huddled in one of the unopened buds, you could almost see it straining it was clinging so tightly!

PODcast IMG_6598The photograph you see of a green door is a very special place, it’s a new outside toilet. The POD Father has worked really hard flooring it with leftover wood and tiling around the sink. It’s rather lovely there now, he’s done a superb job.

We’ve seen lots of rather delicious looking blackberries and apples appear in the garden recently. Although the birds are beating us to it, there is definitely some fruit there for the taking!

The upside of the wet weather is more macro practice with the humbug snails. It’s such an incredible sight seeing them hang off the stems of our Red Hot Pokers which in themselves look rather striking with their PODcast IMG_6294blackened pods.

The Canna’s bright yellow petals have now disappeared leaving behind rather interesting buds. Their stripey leaves do look rather beautiful littered with rain drops.

Autumn is definitely upon us. A walk in the woods with POD was a wonderful reminder of how good a smell it is though. And I loved seeing the excitement on her face when she jumped in her first muddy puddle!

I am now off to bed with a chorus of Shakin’ Stevens ‘Green Door’ in my head… Showing my age?!

Thank you Sara, I love the Sunflowers! Fabulous to see some colour especially at this time of year. You’re definitely not showing your age, we love Shakey too 🙂

Gorgeous photos as always, love the green door – nice colour choice.

Ah I love sunflowers, they just make me smile, I’ve no idea why – we have only grown some once and I used to sit Kitty out amongst them in her bouncy chair when she was a baby – so many happy memories x

Thanks ever so much for joining in again and sharing my dear -see you tonight!

Thank you Annie. Must have been great to see Kitty among the sunflowers when she was a baby. These were from seeds, have done amazingly well. Lovely to see you embraced your love for sunflowers at the MAD’s :))

I love the smell of the woods, especially when they are full of pine trees. Everything smells so clean and fresh. It’s nice to see your sunflower looking so bright. The ones I photographed a couple of weeks ago have lost most of their colour now.

    • Charly Dove September 22, 2013 at 11:43 am

It was such a fabulous smell Gemma, a sure sign of autumn too. The sunflowers you took photos of were huge, very impressive 🙂

  • Emma @ Helvetia Handmade September 20, 2013 at 4:36 pm

Wow, I love sunflowers. Ours this year were very early so we just have the seeds left but they are still great to look at. I love looking at your pictures

    • Charly Dove September 22, 2013 at 11:44 am

Aww thank you Emma, really kind of you to say re; the photos. I’m sure our sunflowers are really late, maybe we were too late planting the seeds!

You take such wonderful pictures Charly, I always love looking at them, the snails are just fab and as for those fat juicy Blackberries, it looks like you could just pluck them off he screen. Autumn is really very beautiful isn’t it xx

    • Charly Dove September 22, 2013 at 6:12 pm

What a fabulous comment Nichola, thank you very much. It’s not quite as vibrant as Wisley showcase but some interesting gems all the same. Autumn is wonderful 🙂

Lovely sunflower – we had a nice big fat one in our garden this summer (we’ve just seeded it!). You can really smell Autumn now. We still have flowers…. but looking forward to cutting back and tidying up in the weeks to come. X.

Thank you very much, it looks like there are more coming now which is rather exciting. A bit of yellow in the garden is rather fabulous at this time of year. Great you still have flowers, make the most of them – we’ll be kicking those leaves in the woods before we know it 🙂

  • Faded Seaside Mama September 22, 2013 at 9:35 am

I love how the macro shots give you a new appreciation of the intricacies of the flowers and plants. They are all amazing – love the sunflowers (and the “raspberries”!!) ;o)
Your outside toilet looks like a lovely job done – usually they’re horrid, damp places!

    • Charly Dove September 25, 2013 at 12:26 am

It add a completely new dimension doesn’t it. I love it! The raspberries have now reverted to being blackberries again and thankfully the toilet is in good shape. Think I’ll go indoors when it’s cold though 🙂

Gorgeous pictures Charly and I love how the sunflowers have brought the bees back. It’s so lovely to have these splashes of colours still in the garden isn’t it? x

Thank you very much indeed. It’s been lovely seeing our little fuzzy friends again. I’ve got quite attached to them over the summer. Really nice to see splashes of colour, I’m hoping the rest of the sunflowers come out 🙂
