You may remember just over a year ago the Premier League launched Primary Stars. It was a wonderful campaign to be involved with at it is a curriculum-based initiative designed to inspired children (aged 5 to 11) across PE and Sport, English, Maths and PSHE. The Primary Stars programme is backed by over a hundred Premier League and English Football Clubs along with industry experts like Edcoms, the PSHE Association and the National Literacy Trust, giving children the opportunity to learn, get active and develop life skills. The resources are free for teachers to use.
Primary Stars is the largest community programme undertaken by the Premier League and a year on, it’s active in 15,000 schools across England and Wales. This exceeds the Premier League’s three-year school engagement target which was 10,000 schools by 2019.
To celebrate, a limited edition poetry book, featuring poems by some of the children who entered the nationwide Writing Stars competition, has been published. Backed by the National Literacy Trust and delivered as part of the literacy resources, the Writing Stars campaign saw over 25,000 children inspired to write a poem about resilience. ‘Try Try Again’, illustrated by children’s illustrator David Mackintosh, also includes poems by famous faces from the worlds of football, television and literature including Premier League top goalscorer Alan Shearer and television presenters Ben Shephard and Rachel Riley. The Writing Stars winners were selected by a star-studded judging panel including Children’s Laureate Lauren Child, Young People’s Laureate for London Caleb Femi, former professional footballer and children’s author Frank Lampard OBE and Premier League footballer and lyricist Yannick Bolasie.

What’s more, the Premier League has also announced that Primary Stars will be extended from the classroom with resources available for families at home. Having been involved in the launch, this pleases the Doves greatly as Primary Stars is such a great initiative. If you head over to the Primary Stars website, you’ll be able to have a look at the use-at-home resources and Solve, Shoot, Score educational games. This will complement the existing teaching resources which span Maths, English, PSHE and PE. The Premier League is available to watch in one billion homes across 189 countries.
