The white sands of Berck

We’ll be covering our recent trip to Northern France with POD’s grandparents over on POD Travels soon enough. In the meantime, I had to share a few photographs of Berck’s white sandy beaches which were almost reminiscent of the moon. While the weather wasn’t on our side, you cannot deny how stunning this beach must be when accompanied with sunshine and blue skies.

Located half an hour away from our Le Touquet base and the walled town of Montreuil-sur-Mer, Berck lies within the Parc du Marquenterre nature reserve. There are two distinct parts to the town – an old fishing village and Berck-sur-Mer which is a 12 kilometre stretch of beach lined with impressive grass topped dunes. Berck-sur-Mer is regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches on the Côte d’Opale.

Ok so it wasn’t swimming costume weather. But the plus side to arriving here on a windy day meant, with the exception of a few kite surfers, we pretty much had this huge beach to ourselves. Having visited Le Touquet beach earlier than day, where POD got to fly a kite for the first time, Berck was all about building sandcastles and staying upright which ultimately led to much silliness!

Despite the blustery winds making it difficult to even hold the camera still, it was easy to appreciate how special a place Berck-sur-Mer is. It has been home to the International Kite Festival, which takes place in April, for the past 25 years. Seen as an event not to be missed on the Côte d’Opale, it attracts enthusiasts and thrill-seekers as well as 700,000 spectators.

This seaside town was formerly a fishing harbour and while much of it was destroyed, the original village and sea-front area still exist. It’s certainly somewhere to explore if you’re in Northern France – if you’re there at the right time of year you might even spot the colony of seals in the Baie d’Authie.
