With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, POD and I have been busy making paper flowers for Daddy. These are surprisingly easy to make and work really well either on a card or as a gift. We’ve pulled together a couple of options so you can see how adaptable they are. All you need for both is coloured card, a selection of paper, scraps of material (optional), Bostik White Glue, scissors and a pencil. Plus a foam sheet if your five year old wants to add some ‘bounce’ to the front of her Valentine’s card (optional!).
First up is the Valentine’s card. We decided to use red as the base of our creation with the focus being Valentine’s. POD wanted a squidgy front to her card so we first added a foam sheet! Next up we glued material with a heart design onto the front followed by a strip of lined green paper. Leaving our card to dry, we set about making a red flower.
How to make a paper flower:
You can use any kind of paper to make paper flowers providing it will wrap round a pencil. First up draw a spiral on a piece of paper, we drew ours in the middle of an A4 sized sheet although the size of the spiral was half that. Cut out your spiral making sure you leave an inch in the middle as this will be the base of your flower. It doesn’t matter if your cutting is a bit rough around the edges! When you’ve finished cutting, make sure you rub out any pencil marks. You then take the tail of the spiral and roll it round the pencil making sure it doesn’t unravel as you go. It needs to be fairly tight to ensure what you’ve done stays in place but loose enough to come off the pencil with ease.
Keep twisting the spiral round the pencil until you reach the circle (your base). You can then manipulate your flower to suit the style you’re going for – our first attempt was a little pointy but we rectified it by loosening the spiral. Once you have your desired shape, put a blob of glue on the base and press the flower down hard so they stick together. We made a Valentine’s card and a single flower bouquet but you could just as easily make paper flowers for a basket. Or add wooden stalks/pipe cleaners and display them in a vase.
As well as having far too much fun making paper flowers, five year old POD also designed a card for Daddy using pink glitter card, embellishments, ribbon, buttons and Bostik White Glue. She added a few heart stickers afterwards too to finish it off. She’s loves crafting so she’s itching to do more already. Thankfully we have a heart to decorate plus we’re on the hunt for wooden dolly pegs so we can make Valentine’s peg people!

I love how you make the flowers swirling round a pencil, off to give it a go!
