Spring is always a superb time of year for the senses what with the birds singing, lambs being born and the sound of children laughing. Being on lockdown has meant we’ve appreciated what’s around us just that little bit more. Here are 5 of the smells we’re loving this spring – all of which from the confines of our garden.
Table of Contents
Blossom
Top of the list has to be blossom, doesn’t it? Buds appearing are surely one of the first signs of spring and those pops of colour when they arrive and the smells always generate a smile. We’re starting to see colour in the garden now which really does make all the difference, especially as the weather has been so kind. We’re starting to see more butterflies and bees too as a result.
Cut grass
While the smell of freshly cut grass can prompt a sneeze or two, it’s a clear sign spring has sprung and summer is in our sights. JD seems to relish mowing the lawn so it’s a job undertaken fairly recently and those stripes do look wonderful when we take a break to enjoy them. We seem to have a lot more birds in the garden at the moment so it’s great to see different varieties hunting for worms.
Overturned soil
The larger beds in our garden have been somewhat neglected for quite a while so it’s been nice to spend some time outdoors. Although its been hard work at times, overturning damp soil once it’s been weeded is one of those forgotten smells we’re loving. The two robins that visit our garden regularly seem to appreciate our efforts too.
Laundry on the line
We’ve been able to dry some our laundry on the line recently which has been a total joy. It’s the loveliest smell bringing in the washing, especially bedding and towels, that’s dried in the great outdoors. We even splashed out and bought some colourful new pegs so we can do more outdoor drying while we’re home.
BBQ’s
Nothing rewards work in the garden more than a BBQ! We’ve managed to squeeze in a couple of family meals outdoors recently thanks to the sunshine. It’s nice to get all those weekend jobs done and have a late lunch – always wise in the event it’s not possible to get up again!
Here’s to making the most of our time at home and getting the garden done so we can enjoy it that little bit more in the future. We hope you are all keeping safe and well in these strange times.
