Alphabet Photography Project

The B&W Photography Project | Week #91

We recently spent some time in the wonderful city of Ghent in Belgium. You’ll be able to read more about it on POD Travels soon but it the meantime I thought I’d share a few photographs from the Great Butcher’s Hall. Located in Groentenmarkt 7, it dates back to the 15th century  when meat halls were indoor market places so the freshness and quality of meat could be monitored. The building is amazing and has an open wooden truss roof with Ghent’s special Garda Hams hanging from the ceiling.

The Alphabet Project | Z is for zoological

Welcome to the Alphabet Photography Project and letter Z! I can’t believe we’ve reached the end, the last few weeks seem to have flown by. This was the third series of the Alphabet Photography Project so it’s been 78 weeks in all. Thank you so much to everyone that’s joined in – especially this time round but also in previous series. It’s been a great way to think a little bit more creatively about what we capture and I’ve loved that about it.

We visited ZSL Whipsnade Zoo not that long ago (post coming!) and I’m always impressed with the work they do. They (and London Zoo) are committed to promoting zoological and conservation research which encourages the public to engage with wildlife. This photograph for example was taken at Cheetah Rock which is a 4,000m² £1m exhibit where the only thing separating you from the animals is glass.

The Alphabet Project | Y is for yacht

Welcome to the Alphabet Photography Project and letter Y! Thank you to everyone that joined in last week.

While tempting to opt for young, I thought I’d share this photograph of a yacht. Not mine sadly but one of the many that featured at the Southampton Boat Show last year. The event showcases 600 exhibitors with hundreds of legendary boats on display including 330 at the show’s marina alone. It’s one of the largest built in Europe with over 2km of pontoons and 100 boats made their debut.

The Alphabet Project | X is for xanthophyll

Welcome to the Alphabet Photography Project and letter X! Thank you to everyone that joined in last week.

I remember in the first series of the Alphabet Project finding this letter particularly easy but only because I had an x-ray! Three series later it’s not quite the same although I find the process of searching for interesting words beginning with X rather fun! Xanthophyll is what causes leaves to go yellow in the autumn although I do seem to capture more of the reds and the oranges. The Acers get me every time!

The Alphabet Project | W is for wunderlust

Welcome to the Alphabet Photography Project and letter W! Thank you to everyone that joined in last week.

Perhaps it’s POD continually asking to go on holiday or our travel blog but either way we seem to be consumed by wunderlust at the moment. It’s that time of year for planning though and more so than usual with POD at school now. We’ve still not quite got our heads around having to go away at specific times of the year, hopefully we will do soon!

The Alphabet Project | U is for underneath

Welcome to the Alphabet Photography Project and letter U! Thank you to everyone that joined in last week.

This is one of my favourite views along the Southbank. There’s nothing better than standing underneath the London Eye especially when it’s 8am and there’s barely a soul around. It’s such a contrast to the rest of the day when the area is abuzz with people. I’ve captured the London Eye many times although this photograph was taken just before the Rugby World Cup hence the branded pods. I keep promising myself I’ll get onto one of them again to admire the view, it’s pretty magnificent on a clear day.

The Alphabet Project | T is for tranquility

Welcome to the Alphabet Photography Project and letter T! Thank you to everyone that joined in last week.

January seemed to be the month for various bugs doing the rounds. Poor POD was ill mid way through the month then again much of last week. Thankfully she’s back to her usual perky self now and we’re getting back into our normal routine. There’s a lot to be said for blowing away a few cobwebs especially when you’ve had over a week cooped up indoors.

The Alphabet Project | S is for serene

Welcome to the Alphabet Photography Project and letter S! Thank you to everyone that joined in last week.

There’s something so calming about being on the beach and listening to the sound of the waves. Being in Surrey, we don’t often get to visit the UK coastline but it’s wonderful when we do. On this particular occasion, we arrived after hours of torrential rain, only to see the clouds disperse and even a little sun appear. With the tide at it’s lowest, this deserted beach was compeletely serene – even with POD digging a hole in the sand nearby.

The Alphabet Project | R is for rose

Welcome to the Alphabet Photography Project and letter R! Thank you to everyone that joined in last week.

In the absence of snow, which POD is still so desperate to see, I find myself craving colour. Perhaps it’s the prospect of spring thats’s doing it with daffodils and snowdrops already making an appearance. I love being surrounded by colour and if I had my way, we’d have wonderful blooms like this indoors all the time. I just love the contrast between the pink and the green.
