We often miss Pumpkin Week at Secretts farm in Milford as it falls on October half term. This year however we were determined to make it, even if it did follow a longer than intended bike ride in the forest. Well, I say that POD rode her bike and we mostly ran along behind her!
If you’ve not come across Secretts before, it’s an award-winning farm in Surrey which has the most delicious selection of gourmet food you could possibly lay your eyes on. Founded back in 1938, the 150-acre farm produces a wide range of vegetables and supplies top restaurants in the South East of England. It also has the largest craft beer collection in Surrey with over 100 beers from 25 breweries plus there’s craft gin, a butcher, tea room, English wine merchant and ethical clothing on offer.
Pumpkin Week takes places from Saturday 26th October to Thursday 31st October and it’s understandably very popular. We arrived an hour after the opening time to discover two fields full of cars but parking (in the pick your own area) was straightforward and the queue at the gate short. Entry is £2 per person which covers the cost of taking the tractor to the pumpkin field and back. If you don’t fancy waiting for one of the tractors, the pumpkin field is only ten minutes walk away.
There’s plenty to do if you’re waiting for a tractor from grabbing something to eat (hot dog, pumpkin soup, curry, cake, waffle stick among other things), having a drink or enjoying the activities on offer. We saw cookie decorating, mini tractor rides and a photo booth along with various activities, including a bouncy castle, from T’Jays Pay and Play.
We had an hour’s wait for a tractor so we decided to walk straight to the pumpkin field. With it being such a short walk away, it was an easy option and many others were doing the same. The route is flat although the pumpkin fields were unsurprisingly a little boggy from all the rain we’ve had. What great fun it was though looking for a couple of pumpkins for Halloween. Pumpkins are priced by their diameter and paid for at the field. We got two small pumpkins for £2 but there are hundreds which vary in size so plenty to choose from. Of course, we forgot to take a bag with us so we picked pumpkins that were easy to carry. It was then back to main activity area for a while before heading home…for pumpkin carving!
