The delight at finding something new in a place you know well is a great surprise. Even better if another unexpected sight takes your breath away just moments later.
Thousands of poppies, in perfectly formed rows basking in the sunshine under a bright blue sky. A real feast for the eyeballs.
Visitors at RHS Wisley exchanged smiles and spoke quietly whilst capturing what lay before them. The sense of calm no doubt instigated by these poignant blooms so widely recognised as the symbol of peace and remembrance.
Walking a little further meant you could sit in-between the rows of poppies. Just sit and stare at the hairy buds, the fragile petals and the intricate detail just calling to be photographed.
I’ve not seen poppies en masse since POD was born, just a handful every now again by the side of the road. Somehow seeing so many in one place brought back memories of that day.
POD arrived on Christmas Day 2010. She took so long to arrive the shortlist of suitable names was long forgotten. Strangely when the midwife asked “what do you want to call her?” we both said Poppy at the same time. So Poppy she became.
Seems a coincidence that in the week I see a carpet of poppies, POD starts learning how to spell. Hearing her say “P-P-P is for Poppy” is the most wonderful thing.

Ahhh that’s really lovely and so in sync too 🙂 when the nurse asked us what we were going to call Z we both just “ummmm” ‘d so he became “infant” for a few days. That poppy field is gorgeous!
Definitely a well timed post with all the celebrations taking place for the 70rth anniversary of the D-Day Landings. We have guests (well friends now) who often stay in the gite and their daughter is Poppy. So is our dog and it does lead to some confusion when we call Poppy!!

A beautiful sight! Remember as a child feeling so disappointed that I couldn’t pick them and bring them home. Made them feel magical. With about a 1000 seeds per seed head and up to 50 heads per plant, its no wonder a field can be filled. Absolutely gorgeous photos.

Poppy is a beautiful name. We had a field of Poppies every year where I grew up. I miss seeing them.

That’s lovely. 7yo isn’t called by her chosen name as when she was born, myself and Hubby just looked at her, then at each other. I said the name and he said yes. So different and wasn’t even a contender. I don’t know where the thought cam from but it was just right.

That certainly indeed is a magic moment. I love it when they grasp their letters and numbers too. It is like a world has opened up to them. Very exciting.

I would love to be able to walk through a poppy field – they are such pretty flowers. We drove up to Northampton a few years ago and there were thousands of them scattered on the sides of the motorway! x
