Giving back to the community at Christmas

In the midst of settling into a new routine, we were asked to get involved in the Co-Op’s #DoorstepChallenge. It’s a great way to give back to the community and saw us fill a stocking shaped carried bag with Christmas goodies. We’d received a voucher from the Co-Op, which we added to, along with a musical card which six year old POD absolutely adored. Although there are a number of great charities in our area, we wanted to visit somewhere we had a personal connection with.

We know the local hospital well and it’s where POD was born on Christmas Day 2010. In fact, this time 7 years ago I was in labour – she took her time making an entrance. We know how hard the NHS doctors, nurses and midwives work, especially at this time of year, so it seemed fitting we pay them a visit. Heading back to the children’s ward meant POD could come along too.

Although the staff we saw were different, it felt strangely familiar returning as we headed through the double doors. I’ve visited the hospital a lot since we’ve lived in Surrey but it was my first time being back in this particular ward. Unsurprisingly all the memories came flooding back. The staff were delighted to see us and listened to POD talk excitedly about her forthcoming birthday.

As we handed over the chocolates, cookies and cake, POD told them how she loved the musical card. The Sister suggested she open it for them. Little did we know she’d start singing to us all which led to barely a dry eye in the ward. Even nurses passing by stopped to watch her belt out We Wish You A Merry Christmas from start to finish. What a ridiculously proud moment.

We’ve had a particularly busy few weeks settling into our new routine but here’s to a wonderful Christmas, best wishes to you all for the New Year. We have high hopes for 2018 and I’m sure you do too. See you on the other side.
